Was at Gisburn at the weekend. Caught up to this bloke waiting on the trail and as we got closer he asked if we'd passed a woman on our way up. We told him we hadn't, but only after asking if she was wearing lycra. He explained that she was, so we parked our bikes and sat down to wait. Shortly the fair maiden came in to view pushing her bike. As she got closer the promise of lycra appeared to have been over exaggerated somewhat, but we were more concerned there was something wrong with the bike by this stage. She passed us before she got close to her boyfriend, we asked her if everything was ok, she gave us a half-hearted smile and said it was. As she got closer to her boyfriend, he shouted down to her "I may as well have just bought you a fu***ing shopping trolley", jumped back on his bike and carried on.

Well it was a good job I was already sat down, because I am sure I would have fallen over laughing at that point. Felt a bit sorry for her though. I'm pretty sure said boyfriend won't have been getting any that night.

lol reminds me of the pair dressed from head to foot in Hope Team gear a while back

And the other weekend there was a mystery couple on section 8 of Follow The Dog. Before the link to The Monkey, she was standing a little way off into the trees with her back to the trail and her arms folded.

50 m further on, he was sitting down by the side of the trail with an Orange of some description by his side. I said 'alright?' and he just gave me 'the look'.

    What was going on?

As someone who learn to MTB with her boyfriend, I can identify with both of those...... :?

I can certainly hold my own now, but sometimes it gets too much! I am stunned there hasn't been a thread on here titled 'Blonde girl on Orange 5 in Peak District told me to ^&*^ off after a witty comment I made about her walking her bike DOWN hill...'

Us ladies have to put up with a lot of sh!t you know

To be fair my other half is great and very supportive, but I wasn't terribly amused by his idea that riding up Jacobs Ladder would be 'nice'

Like the bit about him asking if they passed her on the way up - no doubt worried that she'd thought "stuff this" and headed home! Top marks to her for persevering, and I hope she finds a new boyfriend soon. No doubt he was on the carbon racer, with her on some 30lb piece of cr*p he picked up on ebay!

    That's pretty shocking really!

My Mrs is not a confident cyclist and I fully appreciate that every time I go out with her it's a slow, easy ride. If I fancy a blast I go out with the lads, simples.

That bloke is obviously such a kernob that he has no mates to go out with! Or maybe he was 'showing off' to you guys. Either way, if the lady has any sense she'll have had a go at him later!

I really don't understand this, if you've got someone in your life who matters to you then you go out of your way to make sure they have a good time when you go out together. By all means say, i'm popping off on my own for a bit but if you're riding together you're riding together.

I'm planning on teaching my housemate/ex to mtb over the rest of the summer as things have finally quietened down with our other commitments. It'll start of easy on skills runs along the towpath learning bike control and getting her set up properly on her bike (which is a rather tasty little specialised rockhopper) and a bit more confident before dragging her off round the 'hills' little by little in order for her to learn.

Its the same with teaching anyone. Whenever i take a mate mtbing they ride my nice bike and i ride one of the singlespeeds (unless it's paul as he's far fitter than me so i make him ride the ss so i can keep up on the fast bits) Why would you take someone who is bound to have a rubbish time and just piss you off?

...cos we are virtually fighting 'em off with sticks on the Chase eh?

I go out with mrs.blitz once a week or so but it's a completely different experience. There are some bits of Follow The Monkey she doesn't like so instead of spending ages sessioning them UNTIL SHE GETS IT RIGHT :) we just miss them out and have a social on the fireroads.

See, I would have probably said something to the bloke. That's just despicable.

As for the berating thing, sheeps, I used to know a girl who needed to be wound up to learn virtually anything.
Now, whilst not actually berating, or making any snide comments, if she was trying to learn a new skate move or something, me and her mates would try and subtly wind her up.
In the end she always had this "well fu*k the lot of you, I'LL show you" moment, where she pulled the trick off perfectly :D
We knew she could do it, but she needed some rage to get there, if you see what I mean.

     Guilty as charged...

In my defence though, I've only built hers up last weekend, and she's been out once to see if she enjoys cycling*. I refuse to buy m'lady a uber bling, FS monster until I know she's actually enjoying herself. If she likes it that much, she'll buy herself one anyway.

I started out on a rigid steel Kona, as has she. :) I'd offer her my 456, but it's too big for her!

*by cycling, we rode along the canal, so it doesn't really matter what bikes we were on :P

I'm a bit like that. When I was learning, my best riding was when I got cross and thought pretty much the same as your mate above :D

Totally, would spoil any ride for me.
I regularly ride with people who are younger, fitter and have bigger balls than me, no one pushes anyone to go faster or do anything they are not comfortable with.

If someone wants to try something heroic, the girly types among us watch. And laugh when they stack it.

If I'm with better riders, that pushes me to improve, like if i see someone ahead of me on the trails I'll try and catch up, or like when I went to scotland, the lads I went with were all much better riders than me, but I enjoyed keeping up with them, as long as they were in front, I'd hit pretty much anything they would, as long as i could see it coming. Nothing makes me push harder like a better rider in front, or trying to come past me! (if it was a stranger I'd let them pass, but we were all on each other's heels trying to keep up, was a good laugh)

I can't really imagine my wife going out riding with me. She would end up showing me up most likely because she has no fear what so ever. She's done parachute jumps, bungee jumps, abseiling etc, all of which terrify me.

I do like to try and keep her somewhat involved though, so when ever I am out I always try and find some big muddy puddles to ride through. Gives her something to wash when I get home.

(I am so glad she doesn't read this forum, I am generally ridiculously spoiled and would hate to upset the balance)

Absolutely, that's part of the fun, although I'm still normally last down the hills. Not always last up though.
But there's a difference between challenging yourself and being berated for not being good enough. No fun in that.

To be honest it depends on the situation.

I mean i see loads of woman on thousands of pounds worth of bike, and then they are awful and put no effort in to get better, skipping peices of trails that they will never ever try because there to scared to een try. And with these types i can really feel the urge to shout...

I mean the lads attitude was way to strong, but the we woman have to put up with so much thing is total crap.

    just to chime in

guy sounds like a dick but some women put up with it and so the dick will always be a dick as hes allowed to be so why change. (im not saying its her fault for him shouting at her)

I would never shout at my wife and put her down like that, Mainly because i repect her and want to suport her.
