Is there any way at all that I can pass one of those off as a hybrid, or do I have to buy 'special' shorts now?

Add cyclocross tyres and it's a winner!

Ok, I'll own up and say I've got a hybrid (in case you didn't read my sig). It's this one: http://www.boardmanbikes.com/hybrid/hybrid_proltd.html and I quite like for what it does (commuting into Central London from the 'burbs).

It's only 9.5kg, pretty fast with slick tyres, proper flat bar and good disc brakes: has chunky enough wheels & tyres to deal with potholes, manhole covers and all the sort of stuff that have roadies swerving across the road. No good for off road though; if you're going to do a bit of off-road on the commute or you fancy a tax deductible MTB :) then just get a HT with an extra set of wheels & tyres, one with slicks & one with knobblies on. Job done. If trash mine or get it nicked I might do that myself.

That reminds me, for all the talk of how fragile road wheels are, the ones on my future commuting bike, which cost just over £1k, weigh more than the wheels on my £1k MTB :?

Over 1800g apparently, why?! Possibly because they're narrower, so need more material to stop them flexing about, anyone know?

Haha, I knew there was something else! I was being all clever and thinking about stiffness and rim widths!

Still, I'd expect them to be lighter.
