Hybrids...

Horrible word isn't it... a freak of nature these hybrids!
BUT.... what do we actually think of them?
Going to my new job, i'm tempted by the CTW scheme (100% sure if I can use flexi time) so I can commute.
Now I don't want a roadie... Had one and didn't like any of it.. stupid gears, stupid riding position, stupid brakes.
So is a hybrid a "good" compramise for a MTB'er that needs a commuter?
The Boardman Hybrids look goof VFM/spec, but would I be better getting an actual MTB? hmmm.

what about a 1 grand hardtail but get some slicks for it, lock out the forks for the road. then you'll have another mtb and could try and go on a off road route on the way back maybe?0

well thats the argument... but considering I want something more towards commuting, is a MTB going to be any good?!0
-
Hybrids cover so many bike types though.0
-
flat bar racer.
but more info on the commute needed.
hills?
flat?
distance?
showers?

Those Boardmans just look like flat bar road bikes to me
To me a hybrid would have short travel suspension forks, 700c wheels, touring gearing (28/38/48t), MTB finishing kit & semi slicks (a bit like the Cube LTD CLS Pro)0 -
I've been considering a hybrid for commuting with too. I'm like you, I just don;t get on with the weird riding position and crappy brakes of road bikes, but I like the high gears.
I saw a really very tasty Marin flat-bar hybrid in a shop, with XT discs, and massive road chainrings etc. Looked very neat. I've also seen a very nice looking Felt hyrbird too.
Hmm.
At the moment, I WANT three bikes. A nice lightweight commuter, a BMX, and a long travel frame with a rigid fork and 30-speed fixie gears.0 -

All of the above lol... distance depends, can be 20miles to 8miles depending on if I use the train too.0 -

you need a rat bike as well as a cycle to work bike.
or you will not have a cycle to work bike.
Also be aware the buy back price may be up to 25%
new tax rules."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

thats kinda what I'd be after... road bike but with more of a MTB feel I guess0 -

nah, it would be ride>train>ride so a commuter would be fine!
Yea read that about the tax... ghey!0 -

then you dont want a hybrid.
you want a MTB.
but what you should have is a Flat bar racer.
No Sus etc.
serious go test some."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

yup I wanna test some, just getting an idea!
Got 3 week before I start the job
So you saying if I really didn't get on with a road bike then there's a high chance that I won't like a commuter/hybrid thing?0 -
29er FTW
best of both worlds and you wont look like a knob who bought a bike that was too big for them in halfords0 -

nope, just that they are pointless.
you need 700c (29") wheels. you need thin tyres. you want but do not need suspension. its heavy and does nothing.
look at a cross bike with brakes on the top part of the bars as well."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

So similar to the boardman then? :?
700c wheels - yep
thin tyres - yep
Carbon rigid fork - yep0 -
This is waht I was looking at, and what I thought of as a "hybrid"

Is that not a hybrid then? Or is it? I'm confused.0 -

i was thinking more along the lines of the £1000 being spent on a mountain bike that could also be used for commuting.
does mine look like a road bike with fat tyres?0 -
The one I've seen is £335 though. Not too bothered for that kind of money.0

Actually, it's surprisingly light, especially for that kind of money. I'm not expecting anything epic though, just toying with the idea of a bike to get to work and back on, without wearing out my knobblies, basically.0
