Hear, hear. More cyclists should make for safer roads. Better still, more people to overtake!

Now who we don't want to see on bikes are the fit distance runners, fell runners and the like, with years of established base cardio fitness, transferring that to cycling, and kicking our @rses. Just the overweight, ex-sofa surfers if you please.

I'm 48, 76kg, have a CAAD9 and a Giant SCR2. Love the look of road bikes, riding them and fetling. Didn't start cycling until 2008 - just wish I'd started earlier. Still a few years left of tear arsing around I hope

I thought the article was really funny, Wife saw me laughing at the computer as I recognised too much of what I was reading. Wife agreed when she read it. The secret's out about ordering new gear and getting it sent to work!
It didn't mention that the real rise of the MAMIL is down to the CTW scheme. That's how I got started.

39yrs, 82Kg. Cube Agree GTC Race. Not happy at being branded middle aged though.

Middle-aged is 35-44 (according to the article)...??? I'm 43 and was just about coming to terms with the fact that I might have to start thinking of myself as middle-aged in 5 to 10 years time. Still 63kg, although my bike & gear spending habits would probably qualify me just on their own... I prefer not to work out how much I spend in a year, it would be absolutely terrifying.

ah, yes ! the post it to work and smuggle it home in a briefcase routine - would that be the cycling equivalent of the Great Escape soil bags in the trousers when tunneling trick?

I seem to remember that got rumbled too....

Post to work and home smuggling is a real MAMIL trait!!

Can't help asking - are you faster now at 74kg on the Colnago than you were at 61kg on the MTB, or visa-versa?

  • Well I have motorbike and a mtb and road bike...no I'm not very old.

As for hitting middle age, I will have done the things they talk about well before then.
  • Hmmm... 49. ~80 kg these days.. and with 6 bikes and counting in the shed I'm out the best part of 25 thousand pounds, and Lord only knows how much in accessories. I can ride every day for a month and not wear the same jersey twice.. and a fair chunk of them came from that Swiss company.. :D

Not sure if I count as I did loads of riding in my teens and early 20's but I reckon I'm a born again Mamil. 37yo, 90kg and £1350 on my latest bike which replaced an £800 17 year old 653 steel job so might not be pulling my weight on the cost front at the moment thanks to this damned recession!

    OH BUGGER!!

Looking on the bright side I am 6'-4" tall so probably only 10kg over weight, and I have had a MTB for the past 25+ years, and I do not wear lycra (but have close fitting Gore tops)

If I am a MAMIL then long may they rule.

  • 51 and around 85 kg. Look absolutely ridiculous in me Lycra bibs and top but its just so right for cycling. Also spent a small fortune on bikes and bike bits as well as being an avid golfer which also consumes a large amount of disposable income, but dear god, I love life and the hobbies I have keep me outside in the fresh air, I can't imagine having to sit at a desk all day thinking up acronims to attach to people going peacefully and legally about their daily lives. I can honestly say I'm very proud to have been labelled and mamilified.

Does the term mamil only apply to road cyclists or does it apply to mtbers as well? If it applies to mtbers then my bf is a mamil though he dosnt have a flash bike yet, plus I am on a mission to convert him into a roadie as well as a mtber so I suppose I am creating a mamil for myself. He is 38, 10.5 stone in the army and has retaken up mtbing in the last year, he wears lycra although it's his old stuff and abit retro and almost neon bright so I am going to treat him to some nice new stuff but he does look mighty fine in it. I don't want him shaving his legs though, he would look really odd.

A true MAMIL will always have shaven legs (for the cause).
If that worries you , wait until he bounds about the bedroom wearing just his leg warmers.

But he has a rather hairy front of torso (no icky back hairs) he would look very wrong with a hairy top half and bald legs! I think Id collapse from laughing if he starts running around the place in just leg warmers lol!

If I were Middle Aged then I will have to last until 128 to fulfil the specification! Yes I wear the lycra, it works on a bike, the enjoyment outweighs any thoughts of embarassment. Another thing about being old is that you really do not give a stuff.
The older I get the faster I was

    Assume you mean your duke?

Actually, I didn't include the Dukes and other 2 motorcycles in that amount. That would bring the figure up to well over £120K.

Blimey. what dukes do you have then, my last duke was a 999

I will hazard a guess at the Desmocedici as per his name sake which by the time you add the Ti exhaust to it's initial price puts it over 40k IIRC. I would also guess something older but equally rare like a 996RS maybe a foggy rep?

But whatever I think we(or at least I) need to know!
