I'm an OGIL - old git in lycra :D I'd love to be a MAMIL but sadly my age, 55, disqualifies me :(

Did make me chuckle (despite being too young to be classed as one)
  • Not so much a Mamil - more of an oapil. Lycra was not about when I was middle aged!
    66 and 61kg on a 2009 Cannondale Carbon Synapse.

Bloody press. They're sumpthin' else ain't they? One day they're reporting about beer-swilling fat gits and how unheathy UK men are, and then they seem surprised about all these Mamils zooming around on flash bikes.

I wonder if they'll report about the female riders. They probably don't realise what is under some of the lycra.

52 and 13st 2lb, £825.00 Giant Defy 2 and some OK clothing (no team kits), not a mid life crises though, always ridden bikes and followed the sport and it keeps me fit.
  • 43, 87kg, well over £35,000 worth of bikes in the house. I think I'm over qualified.
  • Assume you mean your duke?
  • Assume you mean your duke?

Actually, I didn't include the Dukes and other 2 motorcycles in that amount. That would bring the figure up to well over £120K.

My legs are outclassed by the quality of my bike.

52 (for another 3 weeks) 70kg and probly £2k on not at all flashy bike / kit / tools / parts over 2 years.

It isn't a mid-life crisis, I've always cycled. It's my hobby. It keeps me fit, out from under my wife's feet, and gives me an excuse to be fettling in the garage.

Let's do a Tour de Mamils!
  • 41yo and 75kg. BMI = 23

All this Mamil bollox is really p-ing me off. I've cycled for 25+ years and I didn't even bother taking my driving test until I was 30. Now I live on a small island and have sold my car, as it simply never makes sense for me to drive anywhere.

This last two weeks, despite all of the above and being a huge proponent of the benefits of two wheels, I get lumped in with a load of overweight, flabby IT workers/bankers/accountants suffering from a 'mid life crisis.'

The flip side is that people who 10 years ago were telling me to grow up, are now asking me what sort of bike they should buy.

My loyalty discount at the LBS has trebled this year

Well, I'm not flabby (a little overweight perhaps), I don't work in IT, I'm not a banker or an accountant (pretty carp at Maths) and I'm fairly certain I'm not suffering from a mid-life crisis (4yr old daughter and 5month old son keep me young).

So I guess that I'm not a "Mamil" after all :):)

"carp" was deliberate! Most forums won't let you write "crap" (although they seem to get away with it on P&L  )

    Oh dear,

    Age - 39 (check)
    Accountant - (check)
Cycling for less than a year - (check)
Mid Life Crisis - (check - wife says so)

Guess that makes me a textbook mamil 8)

Well, I've lost a stone, so must look a bit better now!

I am not an acronym, I am a free man!

Actually I'm 45, weigh 85kg, and my bike cost £120 (done over 10,000 miles now). I got into cycling, after a long gap since my teenage years, because we identified it as a good family activity: the road started calling shortly after that, about 6 years ago - I put over 8,000 road miles on my MTB before splashing out on the Rusty Raleigh.
I'm not an accountant, I'm a teacher, I don't know if that's on the official mamil list.
I certainly do wear lycra, because it does the job. Most of my kit comes from ebay or Aldi, I have 3 jerseys that must have cost £20 between them.

So it looks like I fit the description in some ways if not others.

Which is just another way of saying that maybe there is an identifiable social phenomenon going on here, but like any trend it is made up of real, individual people who have their own motivations. There would appear to be some Real Cyclists who don't like it (see above) but how can it be a bad thing if more people are cycling? I suspect that there are always some people who would prefer being part of a maligned, misunderstoood minority to joining the mainstream, or even have the mainstream join them.
