Been of the bike for 6 weeks due to holidays and work commitments.Out today for the first time and it really was hard.Ave heart rate was 10% higher than normal. I didn't think fitness dropped off that quickly!

Agreed. I think I seen somewhere that after 4 weeks you get to tipping point where considerable effort is required to get yourself back to shape you were in beforehand.

In your case what your HR did on your ride was an extremely unreliable indicator (if any indicator at all) of your fitness. You will have been so 'fresh' that your HR will have been essentially meaningless. So trying to in any way equate HR to 'fitness' on a first training ride back is really not worth doing. (If I'm completely knackered from loads of training, my HR won't go up very high when I train - but that doesn't mean I'm suddenly loads fitter than I was the day before.)

A first ride back after a long break is one of those times when a HRM will deliver such a curved ball that you're better off leaving it at home IMO.

It's called reversibility mate, you become 'unfitter' for want of a better word much quicker than you gain muscular endurance etc.

What happens after 365 days? Does your VO2 max go down my 365% and keep going?....

Just like the price of petrol.
No-one wanted to eat Patagonia Toothfish so they renamed it Chilean Sea Bass and now it's in danger of over fishing!
