I'm Scottish and hate the misguided sanctimonious comment scots make that make them look and sound daft, yes Scotland04, I'm talking to you.
Thank you for putting it so clearly & so well. I really resent that chip-on-the-shoulder-is-great crap that we have to put up with.
Cheers, you did it far better than I could!0 -

Jimmy Logan and Moira Anderson damaged my ears on many a hogmany when i was a kid.
True.
But at least we had a real Hogmany.
I really miss the annual ritual of first footing.
Knocking on a door at 3am now just because the lights are on is more likely to lead to an altercation than a partyNone of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.0 -

Scotland04 wrote:Robert is a true Scottish legend. To my mind there have only ever been 3 true geniouses in Scottish sport. By that I mean athletes who have been so determined and self motivated that success was innevitable on the world stage. Robert Millar is one the other two are Graeme Obree and finally Liz McColgan. All of these athletes have succeeded where other Scots have merely taken part. They all came from difficult backgrounds and dragged themselves to the top by whatever means it took. I do not look upon Robert as a Brit as I hate that phrase and it's connotations. He was a Scot and that is why he succeeded. There is a determination within Scottish sportsmen and women that I don't think is found anywhere else in the UK. It may be to do with having a chip on both shoulders but it is part of our psyche. As far as Boardman ,Simpson and even Mark Cavendish are concerned they couldn't lace Robert's boots.
Great first post by our resident SNP spokesperson. Oh, you missed Alan Wells from your list of truly great Scots sportspeople. I suspect Millar was so good because of his own personal attitude not because he happened to be born and raised a Scot :roll:0 -

Do you mean Eric Liddell? :oops:0

Millar was a bit coy about being Scottish. He seemed happier living in France and at times asked people to address him French. He left Glasgow as soon as he could and never returned for long.0

+1 it's embarrassing. You list 3 people as being truly great and say it's because they were Scottish that they were so. By that theory there would be more than 3. As other's have said, there are easily more than 3 anyway.Scottish and British...and a bit French0 -

Apart from being GB Coach, coach for a Scottish team in the Pru Tour and inducted into the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame you mean?0
