Ealing to Hampstead/Highgate?

Hello!
I have to get to the bishop's avenue in barnet for 9am friday, I live in Ealing, right by the ealing studios.
Google maps tells me that it's only 10 miles around the north circular, but even I wouldn't want to cycle on the north circular. And I'm quite brave. I drive on it a lot, but have never noticed whether there are cycle paths all the way along it.
The google maps walking option shows me a route where I'd head north at Acton, pass Willesden then cross over Hampstead Heath.
The latter is more tricky for nav, some of the roads are quite small.
What do you reckon? Any other route ideas?

It's in Essex...0 -
If I was doing it, I'd probably try:

Mind, I don't actually know the roads around there.0 -
Bishop's Avenue as in Billionaire's Row? Can't they send a helicopter to pick you up from Ealing?0

Longer route via Essex to get it?0 -
No Cycle Paths along the North Circular from what I've seen.
To be honest, with Friday morning traffic, it's going to be quicker to head through Central London anyways. There is a cycle route that goes up from Euston area to Highgate.0 -

That's the one, and no, I don't have a helipad...0 -

Hmmm, interesting... a bit more round-about but possibly easier to follow.0 -

Oh, ok, again interesting... Annoying re teh north circular though, they should put in a superhighway.

I don't know your end of the journey, but given that I reckon I would be tempted to come into town, up by Euston, Camden, either Holloway Road/Archway Road or Dartmousth Park Hill and then straight up the A10000 -
I used to go to school just around the corner from you. No, not Ealing Green, Saint Saviours. I remember when the shop on the corner more or less opposite was still called Marshalls. Sweetie day was Thursday.....0

Aha! A breakthrough!
It turns out that I can actually get a London Overground train to very nearby from Acton (near me) to West Hampstead (near them) in but 13 minutes! That's rather good.
It looks like I might be able to take a bike too, if I don't mind getting there an hour early. Any one have experience of bikes on the overground between Willesden and Hampstead post 0800? How strict are they about the rules?0 -
they are big wide new trains with no seats (undeground style) so there should be room, not sure what the rules are thoughroad0
-
Not sure they're that strict about the rules, but I've used the Overground on that route before (albeit going the other way) and it gets extremely crowded, so you may have trouble getting the bike on.
Or some very dirty looks from fellow passengers.0 -

Re: bike on the overland, I have taken mine on the Silverlink without any drama. There is lots of space in the carriages and nobody has ever complained. There are some tricky stairs at Willesden though, depending on what platforms you have to move between.0 -
if you can wait until later this evening i can post up the route i took from my office to the bike whisperer.

The wiki's wrong, Toprak sold for £43m, and I thought it was to the wife of the president of Kazakhstan.
Anyway, cool, I may well do the bike-on-train. It says any time between richmond and willesden, and if it's super-busy I'll just chain the bike up at acton.0 -

I plan to, if I can take my bike on the train up there, I'll ride down to mayfair, then home from work.0 -
fair enough. its quite a nice ride from ealing to finchley
disclaimer: no its not, and my garmin took me up a verticle incline with no cars parked on it due to the angle of the road.BMC TM01 - FCN 0

yeah, i kind of knew where i was but wasnt certain so i followed my garmin.
it took me straight over a main road, and up what was essentially a climbing wall with foothold and handholds built in, got to the top, and carried on following my garmin, it took me right, and then right again, and back onto the main road where it told me to turn left...
oh and if you want hills they are all in between bishops avenue and central londonBMC TM01 - FCN 0

I'll meet you at the top of W Heath Rd tomorrow and you can tell me. Luckily that's one of the easier ways up that hill.0 -

By train? Yep, I'd say that's pretty easy... :P0 -

I dunno, I find PT one of the more painful ways of getting anywhere...0 -

Nearest train is Hampstead underground station (and even that is qutie a bit down from the top)... all overground stations are at the bottom of the hill in either direction.0 -
west hampstead station is not THAT near Bishops ave. Maybe 2 stops later, you can get off at Hampstead heath station, albeit at the south end of the heath.
but don't know what you'll do without the bike in either case.0
