Twig Warning!

I don't know about other parts of the country, but around here we've had some pretty strong winds and also lots of landowners trimming trees and such. Because of this there are a lot of twigs and sticks on trail - be warned - one of the little buggers (only about the thickness of my thumb) found it's way into my rear wheel on Saturday and did about £100 worth of damage! (not including the mess it made of my hub anodising and chainstay paintwork) :(

Course it would, a shadow is an illusion of a lack of light, therefor impervious to damage.

At least thats what the guy behind the counter said as I handed over my hard earned.

The only sram mech I'd be interested in would be the tarty red X0 one, and then the repair bill would been even higher!

in this case a shadow may not have helped, but normally they are much better, due to my shadow i have avoided new mechs and hangers a number of times, scratches were just scratches, not bent mechs.

when i had a normal one, i used to rip it off on a regular basis, as of yet, no such occurance with the shadow.

S'funny you should say that I was having a shifting prob at the weekend and when I checked the mech it had unscrewed itself 5 mm :?

Sure you don't mean the shadow XTR?

That just looks flimsy to me. The old Shimano XTR had much more beedf, yet still only weighed 206g.

hmm, true. I wouldn't spend that kind of money on a mech anyway, but the XT shadow has seen off plenty of crashes and twigs, so it may be quite tough.

THIS is more like it though

It's the one I'll be replacing my SRAM with towards the end of summer, anyway, coupled with some nice XT shifters.

Not going to bother replacing until what I have now wears out properly though - new wheels are my priority.

saint looks top piece of kit , cant bear to part with £80 for any rear mech though.

I'd rather by 8 Acera rear mechs lol, they are as tough as old boots.
  • I've killed 2 XTR Shadows, now onto a Saint, which is the dogs and has already had a few whacks and come out unscathed!

unfortunately this exact thing happened to my carbon X0, snapped the carbon jockey hanger in half

if i ever kill my x0 mech it is getting the x9 treatment, i cant bring myself to spend so much on a part when you couldnt recognise the difference between shifts in a blind taste test.

I love the chunky look of that Saint. I fancy one of those for my winter upgrade to replace the X9. Any disadvantages to them? (Other than price :? )

Yep, you'll get religionists following you around on a pilgrimage, and trying to build a church to worship your mech.
They can be a pain, but it's worth it.

you will need some shimano shifters, this is a much bigger disadvantage than the price.
