I live in Sweden and the local club has talked its way into borrowing a 2km race track (for cars) every week.

I was there yesterday and it was great cycling fast not having to worry about trafic and such. I rode laps alternately hard and easy - making it a good interval session for me but do any of you have any ideas for 'fun' competitions we could do next time?

Ideas that are accessible to a mixture of cycling abilities - we're not all racing cyclist - would be most welcome. I'm thinking of things like a variation on devil takes the hindmost - all ideas welcome!

Our club has the use of an oval car track once per week.
We do a 'Devil' ride. Also, use the track to teach members how to ride a chaingang, and as it's traffic free, we put cones out and teach handling skills to youngsters.
The new TT riders use it to get used to their aero set ups.

I used to train on the Grand Prix circuit at Albert Park (Melbourne) a lot - lovely flat 5km circuit. It's not closed to cars but mostly pretty traffic-free. My husband and I used to play 'pursuit' on it (yes, I used to lose every time but I tried to make it as hard as I could for him). Also, if he was doing a recovery ride and I wasn't, we'd set off from the same spot at the same time and I'd see how many laps it took for me to lap him.
  • Handicap race.

Send riders off at different times according to form and first past post wins. You might do it in small groups so that riders of similar ability learn how to work together.

Handicap times depend on length of race and spread of abilities. You may need to have scratch riders start more than 1-lap down on limit.

Alex - can you explain this bit a bit more for me? :)
