Look at last year, Hushovd won the jersey in the alps.

It is not really a sprinter's jersey - it is the most consistent finishers jersey. Which is why an extremly dominant non sprinter such as Merckx can win it. The key here is finisher - if you don't complete the Tour you don't win it. Cippolini was the best sprinter of his day and he never won the green - he wore it yes but he never won it.

It is not such a subtle distinction - to win the green you need to keep finishing high up in the stages all the way through he tour - not just outsprint a few others on the flat stages.

Is it weighted the same in the Giro and Vuelta? Again, Jaja won the points at the Giro post crash and managed to take all 3 jerseys in the same year at the Vuelta. Having said that he is the exception and it generally gets won by a spinter but as others have said not necessarily the fastest sprinter but the most consistent.

Hmm Mercyx 1969 all three jerseys. Eddy a sprinter? Yes the route/jersey has been weighted for sprinters in the recent past but I think it's changing Pure sprinters banged out at mtn stage one (Aah Mario) but now you need to be able to get over a hill as it was in days of yore. You must make it most of the way to Paris now as opposed to 7 dull sprints in the first week and 43rd over the first molehill

Cavendish has undeniably got the best motor in the sprints, he is every bit as good as Cancellara is when it comes to the TT discipline. Don't forget that luck can play such a big role in the final 500m of the big races which means a sprinter can never take a win for granted.

Yeah and an overly favourable judges decision...
