This what the Royals cost the UK last year.

38.2 Million Pounds...62p for EVERY person in the UK.
( Sounds quite "cheap" when you put it like that, sort of.)

Think of the all the Hospitals, Schools, Social Services and Aged people who could benefit from this sort of money???

This is SICK, Totally SICK...

And no, the "They bring tourist in" crap doesn't wash.
France, the USA and many other countries have flourishing tourism businesses,
BUT have NO ROYALS!!
Just get the blood sucking vampires off the throne anD deported to Germany/Greece.

Why doesn't everyone give one pence a week to Cancer Research?

Much better course of action all-round.

A couple of them have served in a combat zone have they not? If you want to debate something sensibly avoid catch all statements like 'blood sucking vampires'. imo

38 million is a drop in the ocean when it comes to national funding. It's enough to keep the NHS going for eight hours.

I guess a lot of that goes to upkeep of various stately homes etc etc as well doesn't it.

Also - France has the South of France and the Mountains and is centrally located in Europe. USA has massive geographical diversity and theme parks.

    We have.... Blackpool.

I'd love to see how much "royal" based money is brought in through tourism. I wouldn't be a royal for all the gold in the tower of London....

In fact, I was GOBSMACKED to find out that, this had GONE DOWN BY 10% !!!!

So, the Royals are BETTER value for money? Er...No.

They served in the Armed Services then, ummmm, so have thousands of others, some who came back in pieces.

The Royals, ALL of THEM, have no point. Just because 5,000 yrs ago, their army was bigger than the next army, THAT'S the ONLY reason they rule.

think yourself lucky, toronto just hosted the G8 conference. 600 million pounds for security (add more for food/accomodation/IT support), for 4 days!!

That'll get you 15 years of the queen and all we got was the CBD shut down.

Yes others have also served, that is my point..the Royals who have could've quite easily said no thanks put themselves in a situation I certainly wouldn't put myself in. Not saying it justifies their cost but meh there are more important things to get so worked up about.

Its been a lovely summer so far and if anything has no point then ranting on an obscure forum rather than enjoying the weather it surely qualifies too.

ps. If you want to get really over-excited there is a story today that the Pope's visit later in the year could cost us £10million and that does NOT include Policing costs. Now that is something to squeal about.

It was saying on the news the popes visit is set to cost the tax payer 12million squid plus the catholic church are stumping up a further 5million and this is still not covering the cost of his state visit.

As for the royals, I'm a republican at heart but in reality 1p/person per day isn't that much really.

Perhaps cancer research charities should stop sending me junk mail every month just because i did the London Bikeathon one year. Nobbers.

God save the Queen. I'd rather have the royal family than a richer charity.

can everyone send me 1p per day too then please.

I promise to live in a series of huge houses predominantly barred to you lot, expect to be treated as if my poo smells of flowers, chauffered around with a police escort ignoring the rules that the rest of you have to live by wherever I go, eat and entertin on a grand scale and spend a good chunk of the year whizzing round the world enjoying the lavish hopitality of my hosts.

in return I'll stroll round a few sports centres and army parade grounds touching as few of you grubby lot as I can get away with.

Love the editing of my post. I said I'm a republican at heart but at 60p/person a year isn't as much as I would have expected.

Over the years I've given thousands of pounds via taxation which has been spent on a right selection of totally undeserving cases/causes. As much as I disapprove of the royals there are w@nkers in prison etc that should only get the cost of a rope never mind £2,000/week.

Maybe I should have put a smiley on there to indicate the tongue in cheek nature of my post. Or possibly listed all the crapholes in France or the USA to balance the books.
Having just done a JOGLE (the scenic way) - I am more than aware of the beauty of this green and pleasant land, but many countries have similar beauty. What few countries have is the tradition and history of the UK - and part of that is the monarchy in all its glorious, gory, inbreed, elitist imperfection

I'm certainly not a Royalist, but what would happen without them....I'll tell you.

Without the Queen/King we would have a political upper house filled with failed politicians or "retired" politicians or lawyers and the same 3 political parties squabbling just like the parliamentarians. And, how much is that going to cost?

So, I'm left with a Royal family I couldn't care less about and a potential goldmine for failed MPs. Doh, some choice!

I'm not a fan of the royal family, but the costs involved in keeping them really isn't that big a deal... What would you do with the extra 62p a year? Would it really improve your life that much?

I take it whatever you propose to replace them with is free?

As far as I can see keeping hte right to dissolve Parliament, or not, and to call elections, or not, out of hte hands of politicians is well worth the money.

There's wastage everywhere. 38.2 million isn't that much money. How many families does
that include and do they pay tax on this income now?

Under Labour you could claim about 1600/week housing benefit (per week, I kid you not).
That's about 140k income before tax for doing nothing !!?!!

Our national anthem is a joke, but no-one seems to notice. I'd rather not have royals, but
    what's the alternative?

Yes much better we get rid of Royals and become like every other federal country in the world, we could be like the US (meh). More disturbing for me are "Heads of Diversity" earning £100k a year, or "Heads of Waste Management Communications" earning similar figures. Add up all the non-jobs in the public sector and ten times the savings could be made.

How much money does having the Royal family bring in from Tourism? £38m is fcuk all in the grand scheme of things, and I'm sure far more is brought in by having them.

  • From a quick search on Go-ogle...

£38m to run the Royal Family 2009-2010 (down by £3.3m from the previous year)

~£200m revenue from tourism related directly to the Royal Famly.

Since 2001 head of state expenditure has reduced by 17.0 per cent in real terms

Whatever your opinion of the Royals, from a purely financial standpoint they're a good investment for the UK...

    38.2 million is nothing.

as said...revenue generated by the royals is estimated at £200million....

the highland midge reportedly costs the scottish tourism industry £286million a year!

in that context...the royal family are a bargain!

Compared to the NHS's £110 Billion annual budget, it is. It's 0.03%. It's like giving someone earning £20k pa a fiver - it's not going to solve their problems.
