Crikey. Seeing that picture, reminded me of another disreputable doper

It's a little like wrestling a gorilla. You don't quit when you're tired. You quit when the gorilla is tired.

Stefan Denifl is a promising up-and-coming Austrian rider, and he wasn’t speaking for all Austrian riders, since three Austrians under WADA suspicion of doping although not (yet) banned were withdrawn from the Tour of Austria just before it began - their team and the Tour organiser ‘negotiated’ their withdrawals.
Bearing that in mind, Denifl’s wish that, instead of Ricco and Sella, more young Austrian riders could take part, also rings a bit hollow.

As for Ricco and Sella, the organisers pointed out that the presence of the two in Austria is no different to that of Basso, Vino, etc elsewhere – that they had served their sentences and had their licences back. They said couldn’t reject single riders from invited participating teams without reason, as it would be against Austrian employment law, but they recognised some other riders might not be happy.

Overall, the Tour organisers were probably happy about the news coverage Ricco brought the race, as they hope for it to get a higher status on the calendar.

I guess the difference with Ricco is that no-one liked him before he was officially a doper.
