Any recommendations or advice on what to stay away from and what to look out for?

I have a Cycle Ops Fluid II - Very quiet and reliable...
But, in this weather, you really want to stick to the roads, as they numb your head!
Great for winter, and interval training...

I have used a couple of Tacx trainers but recently changed to a Cycleops Jet Fluid Pro.

It's much better, feels much more like road effort (no dead spots).

    Highly recommended.

A lot of people recommend the Kurt Kinetics but they are rather pricey...

cheers for that.. I am also biting the bullet again for more structured training and was looking for a reasonably priced trainer
lack of funds means the cycleops is sitting in my CRC wishlist

Thinking I will use a mixture of Turbo, spinning classes and the road when its not such rubbish weather.

Why spinning classes, if you have a turbo, Carley?
Good use of your turbo and road miles when possible will see you gaining all winter...

I've got a Kurt Kinetic Road Machine. Very good piece of kit - very realistic feel to it. It's still turbo training though, isn't it.

anyone use the VR type of trainers like the Tacx? I know they are expensive but I get soooo bored on my old trainer that I wonder if it might be the key to staying more engaged and getting a good workout?

Looking at the Sufferfest videos they might well be a good option though, with a decent tv screen in front and some speakers to get you going. I'm sure my som will be able to sleep through it all OK.....

@ CarleyB, be careful with the resolution & quality of some of the Sufferfest videos if you are planning on a HUGE tv. Revolver is better quality, but Downward Spiral not so great.

I play them on a 22" monitor, and they are acceptable, but not HD quality...

Doesn't affect the pain they cause though :)

I've got a Kurt Kinetic.....got it second hand as they are pricey new....feels very nice to ride and doesn't slow down too quickly so it doesn't feel like you are constantly slogging up a hill.
It is invaluable when the roads get too dangerous through winter.
