Feeling the pace is tough in a slower group....

I wonder this.
I thought it was just me but other people seem to notice it.
When in a group, going slower than you'd normally do on your own, why can it actually knacker you out as much as doing a rider on yer own but faster?
I did about 80 miles on Sunday, it was at a very steady pace, yet the next day my legs were stiff and felt like crap, yet when I rode on Thursday, I rode to the TT, did the TT, then chainganged it back and absolutely thrashed myself; the next day I my legs felt better than they did on Monday after Sundays ride.
And when I'm in some groups, I'm like, how on earth can I do a faster pace, I'm feeling rather tired, or, how can I do 160 off miles at 18+ avg when I feel pretty taxed already.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

I know what you mean, I can average faster on my own than in a club run, but the club runs feel harder. I think it's because of the changes in speed. In a group you tend to accelerate harder out of corners.... also you are riding at other people's speed, which I find tough even if it's not that fast.0

I find climbing hills at slower than my normal pace is an absolute killer.0
