Calf & Knee Pain

I've been getting calf pain on my right leg towards the mid left side of the calf. Any ideas what might cause calf pain? Also getting a bit of pain above and to the left side of my left knee. That is probably cleat related. Any ideas what way to move the cleat to try that out?

I also get that but only on my left side. I wondered if I am 'grinding' the joint.
I've been playing about with seat height but not to any noticeable effect and my cleats have a fair amount of play in them. Often after about 30mins constant riding, I need to unclip on one side for a 'stretch'.

Yeah I've been fiddling with seat height too but I have only noticed things getting worse when I do that so I've ruled that out. It gets really noticeable when going uphill seated and I'm pushing it so it looks like the pressure is building in this position and that seems to chime with what you have noticed. Now as to what causes it well that's what we are both trying to find out. Perhaps a cleat problem or maybe the fore/aft position of the saddle.
Will pay close attention to my cleats next as I think that is at the route of my knee pain so I will try and get both cleats setup better.0 -
Go and see a physio.
In the meantime try doing plenty of stretching. Every day, not just when you're out on the bike. Look up some stretches for calfs, quads and hamstrings and do them for about a minute at a time. It might not be the problem but there is a chance that it is and you should be doing the stretches anyway.Scottish and British...and a bit French0 -
I've got an appointment with my sports masseuse at the end of the week and hoping to get some advice on this particular problem.
I had a good stretch after my ride today and plenty re-hydration,

Thanks dulldave I do stretch a lot however I haven't gone to physio yet as I want to see if I can resolve the issue myself first and I don't think I'm at serious risk of injury just yet. If it persists for longer I will of course have to go and get things checked out.
Bill I found this thread when trawling around:

Seems to suggest that it may be because the cleat is too far forward putting us up on our toes too much. Moving the cleat back seemed to have sorted calf pain for a couple of people on that thread. I checked mine this morning and my right foot is a bit further forward than my left so I've moved it back a bit. I'm not on the bike today so will check it out tomorrow however you may want to give it a go yourself.0
