For what is worth.. I started this thread with the intention of it being a decent and thriving discussion about Sundays Championships only for it be turned into a childish bun fight by captain Kleber and a nonsensical argument that only a continenental pro is worthy of winning it.
. I see an awful lot of trifle posted on here about continental racing, but very little about the thriving domestic scene we have and the talent being developed. The lack of inteliigent comments may reflect a lack of knowledge or a disinterest in the uk scene by members of this board which is a crying shame.
Jesus wept. It's a discussion forum, you have no control over the direction the discussion will take so don't start crying like a baby if it doesn't go in the direction you hoped.
As for it being a 'childish bun fight' who first resorted to personal insults? I'll give you a clue, it wasn't Klebér.
Now that i'm back on my chair after being displaced by laughter maybe you could offer an informed opinion on who you think will win... I think we've established that any winner is a worthy winner.
I think andyp will win. Thick Tester is far to full of himself.0 -

I wanted to make the point that we have some genuinely world class riders but often the winner is a secondary rider.

:?: question:
why are there loads of cat 4/3 riders in there? lots of "private members" at lower categories? how did they get in? Are there just NO women racers in britain or something?0 -
Newton got hit in a hit and run the other day.
Think it was only minor injuries though hopefully...0 -

Bar the National Womens Road Race Series there are very few Ladies only races and thus less realistic oppurtunities for said Ladies to rise through the points system. Do not read too much into them as there are some quality riders in there. Those who have moved through the ranks have done so entirely on merit and deserve the upmost respect.
And don't forget that a few riders like Hannah Mayho are missing following the training crash earlier this yearTeam Banana Spokesman wrote:how did they get in? Are there just NO women racers in britain or something?
They sent an entry in.0 -
I do hope that the boys (formerly) in blue catch the erk responsible.
Newton is a good rider and surely in with a good chance this weekend if he is fit.0 -

Speaking of National RRs....
The Belgian one is always worth watching. Has to be the most hotly contested of the national jersies. It's a big deal for the Belgians to wear it, and since Belgium has more than its fair share of one day racers (as well as a public who deep down prefer them to stage races), it's usually pretty good stuff.0 -

Although the jersey naturally fits Boonen, I'd like to see Gilbert win that. I can't remember him wearing the jersey. Failing that Van Den Broeck. I can't remember the last time a the Belgian jersey even pretended to challenge for GC at the Tour. As long as it's not One Race Devolder. It has to be, to my mind, the most iconic of the national jerseys.
As for the UK nationals - how unlucky are the organisers? A good course, a big British team, lots of stars and then an England-Germany World Cup game takes over. Maybe in World Cup years they should hold the race in Scotland.
And while I'm at it, isn't the UK champions jersey really bland?
We need a little less of this....
And a little more of this....

I was planning to do this anyway as I’m racing myself on Sunday0 -

I'll be recording it too and I think I'll manage to avoid the results. I was thinking more of the number of people on the course, watching live.Twitter: @RichN950 -

The top end of that field is world class though and would (has) graced any race. As for the 3rd and 4th cats, as someone else said chances are limited for women to get points. There's a woman in there from my club who is a 3rd cat, she's in her first season racing and has been up near the front in national series races and has also been finishing in the main bunch in local men's races (and was still in the bunch until crashing in the men's Welsh champs!) where her sprinting is just not strong enough to beat the male riders. Being a private member doesn't necessarily mean you aren't a good rider either, just that you choose not to ride for a club.0 -
I notice Chrissy Radon is riding the women's event as a 4th cat and, I think this is only her fourth or fifth event. She's taking a break from time trialling (back problems) and giving road racing a go.
Got any chance? Dunno but she's recorded a 20-49 for a 10 and 54-06 for a 25, so not too shabby. :shock:0 -

Depends if she can accelerate quickly ( and on climbs ) -0 -

thats the standard...fewer girls on the road...
but if that is who we have then thats the way it is...
I don't have a problem with 3/4 cats being in there"If I was a 38 year old man, I definitely wouldn't be riding a bright yellow bike with Hello Kitty disc wheels, put it that way. What we're witnessing here is the world's most high profile mid-life crisis" Afx237vi Mon Jul 20, 2009 2:43 pm0 -

I really like the the understated elegance."If I was a 38 year old man, I definitely wouldn't be riding a bright yellow bike with Hello Kitty disc wheels, put it that way. What we're witnessing here is the world's most high profile mid-life crisis" Afx237vi Mon Jul 20, 2009 2:43 pm0 -
+1 some of the other jerseys you see in the pelaton are extremely garish - especially the further east you go (or west across the Atlantic!). I like the Finnish champs jersey too.0

Boonen won't be winning this year.
His knee is still a problem and he felt he couldn't go deep enough in the Tour de Suisse to have top form coming into the nat champs and week one of the tour, which were both big targets for him this year.
Shame.
Leukemans or Gilbert for me.0 -

It was good for discussion, no? That's what internet forums are for.
Still, the best placed of the three on the podium is ranked 163rd in world. Let's hope Thomas continues his progress and matures into a better rider.0 -
RichN95 wrote:RichN95 wrote:I think Sky might be keen to take the jersey to the Tour, so that'll mean setting it up for Steve Cummings or, more likely, Geraint Thomas.
While someone has bumped this thread, may I blow my own trumpet? (Why can't I do this in PTP?)
A very good call.... .... Stannards tenacity is off the scale - kept getting dropped by the other two then riding past them on the descents. Hardly 'average'0 -
If 3rd in Kuurne Brussels Kuurne in hideous weather is average then i'd love to be average!"I have a lovely photo of a Camargue horse but will not post it now" (Frenchfighter - July 2013)0
