I think Sky might be keen to take the jersey to the Tour, so that'll mean setting it up for Steve Cummings or, more likely, Geraint Thomas.

Is Cummings riding then? Early reports said he wasn't and nor was Wiggins, then they were, then they weren't and now they're back on the start list:

I have no idea to be honest (I hadn't even looked at the start list and just assumed he was).

    It's a funny old race.

Unless the jersey goes to Cavendish, Millar or Wiggins then whoever wins on Sunday is not fit to call themselves the best rider in Britain. Discuss...

Hmmm. I'd add a few more to that (cummings, Thomas, etc) but also to win on that course whoever does will deserve it.

Will be nice to see jersey in the tour mind

Sky could work for Cav and have the jersey for the 2011 tour?

Well Cavendish, Millar or Wiggins don't race much in Britain do they though

Depends. None of them race in Britain, so they wouldn't be the best rider in Britain anyway. The best rider 'from' Britain would probably be more appropriate.

Nothing to discuss... Erm... which part of British Championship do you not understand ?

A wins a win... only this one gives you a jersey, a title and an envelope.. and whoever wins it i'll applaud

I suppose you were the sort of cretin who sneered at Hamish Haynes when he won the title ?

Who? I've only been following the sport since the late 80s so he's probably before my time.

Just teasing, because you sneered at my point

I wanted to make the point that we have some genuinely world class riders but often the winner is a secondary rider.

Looks like Wiggo is riding anyway. The jersey and the title is more honourable if it has been worn by real champions rather than plucky chancers.

I would agree with that to some extent in the past. The winner is always deserving but there has often been negative racing towards the few continental based pros. Hopefully now with Sky and with Cervelo having a couple of riders it will stop the top guys getting worked over so much although there are still obviously a few who will be isolated. It would be nice seeing the national jersey in the pro tour races. But if a home based pro wins there'll be no complaints from me as they'll have been the best man on the day.

The champion is not necessarily the 'best' rider but the one who wins the championship race. End of.

It happens in other countries too, though. For example, it would difficult to argue that Ruben Plaza is the best rider from Spain or that Dimitri Champion is indeed a true Champion.

Absolutely RichN95. I think it's a shame that Contador isn't riding in Spain, just as I think the Belgian colours "belong" on Tom Boonen.

To others, yes I know how the race is won. I've even ridden it myself

DNF, clearly leaving a real champion to win. I didn't want to hog the jersey

Actually as it happens I got in THE break with the winner, out of stupidity, not tactical awareness. Then punctured and had no support car. It allows me to rue, fisherman style, the one that got away of course...

...not that that would ever happen, unless some freak, biblical style event.

Well make the point clearly in future...
As far as i'm concerned you have little to say and are saying it too loudly for my tastes..

    Hardly -

For what is worth.. I started this thread with the intention of it being a decent and thriving discussion about Sundays Championships only for it be turned into a childish bun fight by captain Kleber and a nonsensical argument that only a continenental pro is worthy of winning it.

. I see an awful lot of trifle posted on here about continental racing, but very little about the thriving domestic scene we have and the talent being developed. The lack of inteliigent comments may reflect a lack of knowledge or a disinterest in the uk scene by members of this board which is a crying shame.

Having ridden on the roads around the course in the past i believe its perfect for Peter K's strengths, however i'd love to see a local win from the likes of Ben Greenwood or Dan Shand. The roads are painfully narrow in places and it will be easy for the race to become fractured pretty quickly and it will be difficult for riders with mechanicals to get back on

. My prediction is that a bunch of stickleggers will go from a smaller group with an hour or so to go, and that you'll have a dometic rider on the podium

The list of winners is packed full of the best British riders maybe with the exception of Hamish Hayes (who?). So I find Kleber's point about if it isn't won by a continental pro it is devalued all a bit odd.

Still wouldn't want to see Ben Greenwood or Ian Stannard win as both are average at best. Fingers crossed Gez will win it.

Jesus wept. It's a discussion forum, you have no control over the direction the discussion will take so don't start crying like a baby if it doesn't go in the direction you hoped.

As for it being a 'childish bun fight' who first resorted to personal insults? I'll give you a clue, it wasn't Klebér.

Now that i'm back on my chair after being displaced by laughter maybe you could offer an informed opinion on who you think will win... I think we've established that any winner is a worthy winner.
