Cougie, to answer your question, the mid-ride at 83 miles had access to the same stops as the long ride, namely 1 drinks station early on and then 2 drinks/food stations. Absolutely fine for 83 miles.

There was a longer gap between the 2 drinks/food stations and maybe that is steelem's problem.

The scenery and stunning views were inspiration enough to get around this ride.

    Morning All,

I have just found this thread and have no complaints about the "profit" making state of the sportive!

I am hoping, however, for your help! After the first feed stop (where I found the flapjack tasty and the mechanic helpful, oil for the chain) I set off for the next part of the ride. My ride was curtailed just before Ramsbury, apparentley a horse was led out of a field in front of me. The next memory I have is waking up in the recovery position and being told to stay still and wait for the ambulance.

I would first of all like to thank everyone who stopped to help, I am at home now with concussion and cuts and bruises.

I have been in touch with the CTC Accident Helpline and would like to ask anyone who witnessed the crash to contact me via email.

    Thanks again

levad, sorry to hear about that. If that was on the fast downhill bit into Ramsbury, I should imagine it was nasty. Cant help you but get well soon.

if only it was 3 stops - it was 2 - & may i also say how bad the 1st stop was marked we all slammed our brakes on to come back to the stop - looking at my time of 5.3 hrs and they did nt take my 30 mins stops off then ild say im ok with that but with the extra stop that was needed then ild have been a bit happier -

i looked at times today mign was a bit above averae but some were after 7hrs - i mean surely the extra feedstop is needed with these guys not only me dying on my 5hr run

Why would they take your stopped time off? How do they know how long you stopped for anyway? :?

And you do know that its okay to carry food with you right? I did a 96 mile sportive without stopping at any of the feed stops by carrying some energy bars and gels in my pockets.

Steelem, you give the impression of being someone who embarks on things (off-ebay bike purchases, sportives etc) without readingthe details properly, then blaming the providers when you find out from experience :?

To your credit, at least you haven't blamed Wiggle yet.

Steelem, sorry to be pedantic but there were 3 stops. The first a drinks stop at the top of the steep White Horse Hill climb early on, the second a drinks/food stop at Welford on the way to Boxford and the third a drinks/food stop a couple of miles out of Lambourn on the return leg.

The position of the stops was clearly shown on the route map provided with the pre-ride information pack sent by email and hard printed copies of the same map were available at registration. The pre-ride information also described the drinks and food that would be available and also made it clear riders should'nt rely solely on the stations.

Warning signs were placed prior to the stops to say "Slow Feed and/or Checkpoint Approaching".

I have no affiliation to Southern Sportives; i just like the way they run their events and wanted to make clear the facts.

I've changed my view on Steelem, respect to the man, he must have been flyin to have crested that first hill and had to slam he's brakes on for the first feed stop.

ye thanks for making that clearer now that ye that first drinks stop was probaly 30 mins into the ride - as i have just told the promoter the 1st stop is just crazy if it was 20 miles into ride then ok but was that even 10??

Ah well. Good old Steelem. (his bike looks cracking by the way)

Steelem, it might be worth pointing out that the first stop was positioned early on to also cater for the long route riders who had an additional 20+ mile loop before this stop compared to the mid-route riders.

my point exactly - looks like the ride was catering for the short & long riders but what about us mid rangers

Jeez - ok - so lets say its 73miles then - with 2 stops. Thats a piece of pi$$.

You've got a classy bike there - the problem must be with the rider ? Club runs are typically 70 - 80 miles with one stop at most ? Even as a schooly I'd have no problem with that amount of stops. HTFU.

Mate, you're in the wrong sport, as cougie pointed out, two stops in 83miles should be more than adequate if you're carrying two bottles. Cycling fast is HARD - if you cant take the pain stick to tiddlywinks.

I think his point was that the pre-ride information showed where the stops were and hence what the gaps were. Therefore you should have been able to judge whether you need to leave the first early stop full. So the biggest challenge you might have faced was 73 miles with 2 stops.

So if you're going to ride sportives and hope for a nice day out, you must ride 73 miles or even 83 miles pretty regularly. So what do you normally do ? And why didn't you do that on the day ?

Example - my sportive plan for 100 miles would normally be to expect to use 3 750ml bottles. I'll start with 2 full and plan to have one empty to refill at a stop around halfway. That leaves me with a late stop in hand to refill again to make it 4 bottles if I drink more than I expect. Simples.
