I hope your email to them was a little bit better constructed as this makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever.
  • I guess they were out of paragraphs too

I bet the majority of those who whinge about entry fees have never put anything back into the sport themselves. Never got up at stupid o'clock to stand on a roundabout in the middle of nowwhere directing 120 time trialists on the correct route, or stood on a lonely corner for five hours in the pouring rain waiting for the bunch to come round every 25 minutes, let alone helped to organise any event of their own. They expect everything to be handed to them on a plate at someone else's expense and effort then complain about being ripped off if they think the promoting club or organiser are being compensated for their time and trouble.

If you don't want to pay the entry fee for an event then go out and ride on your own.

He bought a sportive from Wiggle, I think.

I'm on to Wiggle in the morning. The wind was far to strong out on the downs and I didnt realise 83 miles is actually quite hard. Southern Sportives told me it wasnt their fault but Wiggle would sort it out.

he ran out of water in between feedstops - and complained to the organisers that there weren't enough shops and petrol stations en route.....

...and he has the cheek to call me a 'tw@t'.... :D

He basically said that the food stops werent up to much and asked what his entance fee had been spent on as all he got at the food stops was banana.. "cut into thirds" and that the lack of food and water meant that he bonked and was "near to collapsing" with 23 miles to go.

Oh and he did the mid ride too.

The basic tone of his email to the organisers was "you're all a bunch of A-holes, i wont be riding with you again"

Ah well. Good old Steelem. (his bike looks cracking by the way)

To be fair to Steelem it is an issue. When I did the Pendal Pedal Sportive the foodstop turned out to be a van on a hill doling out water. SInce then I've always taken my own supplies. Having said that though I dont sportives fo rthe foodstops I do it for the atmos and the challenge. So dont be put off Steelem, get back out there and do another one.

It wasn't an issue today. I did the 105 miles and there was a feed stop at 30, 60 and Ninety miles. They had Water, sports drink, fruit and flapjack. What does he want? A sit down meal with waiter service?

OK, fair enough. Each to their own but why's the original text been removed?

For me the feed stations weren't a problem. I did 3 Southern Sportive events last year and the feed stops are consistent - piece of cake (flapjack), half a banana and water/SIS. I always start with 2 full water bottles and have a couple of my own snacks as back-up plus a gel or 2. Does me fine.

On a training ride 60 to 75 miles I'm self sufficient without stopping.

Seem to remember a thread last year where the food seemed more important than the ride.

you will have to ask steelem that - I suspect he may have had a crisis of confidence - either that or a monkey hijacked his PC while he was out of the room......

Obviously wasn't properly hydrated before the ride.

I completed the long route, 2x 800ml bottles full at start.

Bars and gels in my pocket (it does tell you to bring your own in the entry info!)

Didn't stop at first foodstop, quick splash and dash at second, prolonged stop at third to pocket half a banana, eat flapjack and refill both bottles.

This was plenty enough to see me round in under 6 hours, the wind on the other hand I could complain about!!!

If you want generous foodstops, do the Trossachs Ton. Never seen so much scran on a ride.

Stop 1: bananas, jelly beans, a mountain of biscuits, a hill of millionaires' shortbread, energy drink and water.

Stop 2: a buffet lunch with rolls, pasta salads, loads of other salads, tea and coffee, orange juice, water and energy drink.

Stop 3: flapjack, jelly babies, jelly beans, fairy cakes, water and energy drink

all of this served up by kindly people who positively begged you to help yourself to more.

I had a nightmare with my food and drink strategy last year, so I made sure I got stuck in to these groaning trenchers.

When I got back, still had half my emergency home-made flapjack in my jersey pocket.

BTW, the joining instructions said very clearly that there would be food and drink, but you should nevertheless take responsibility for your own. That is always good advice.

As I was riding through Hungerford on the A4 yesterday, I saw a couple of guys stopped at a junction and looking at a bit of paper. They had numbers on their bikes, so it looks like they were doing this event. Having checked the route on the website, it looks like they had indeed gone a bit off course!

What distance was the mid ride then ? Any decent ride and I'll take 2 bottles with me. I'd have to be riding across a desert to not find somewhere to refill with those ?

I also rode the full distance yesterday and found the feed stations perfectly adequate. I also carried 2 800ml bottles and enough food to complete the course. I topped up my bottles at 1st and 2nd feed stations but as I had a full bottle left over, did not require a refill at the 3rd feed stop....

I also thought the route yesterday was the best one I've ridden too. Bloody damned good ride that!! :-D
