Hey guys and girls i was thinking of starting a new club in cumbria,
For people just starting out and cant bang loads of mile's in. i'm based in Whitehaven normally i ride Sportives on road but do get up Whinlatter with the mountain bike often, so all can be included in ride's out. i dont profess to doing loads of mile's myself due to work.
It seemed to me all the local clubs are not catering for the new starter who wants to ride in a group ride but only short distance.
Anyway let me know. gixxerboss@sky.com

Why not join an existing club - but offer to organise a weekly beginners ride.
That way you get to use the clubs existing organisational structure - but also rides at a pace that suits you.

Yep spoke to Grant from Honister 92 but tried to get out on a ride with them but unles your able to knock in 120 + miles not a chance,
I've asked and said that their club is a bit off putting for a new starter and they were more than willing to have me help them with the site and make it a bit better but still no joy.
So start a club for everyone to enjoy seems easier.0 -

I'm in Appleby, Cumbria and the nearest club is Border City Wheelers in Carlisle, it would be good to see some more in Cumbria. I'm not here for much longer though.0

Shame where you off to anywhere nice, thanks for the comment0 -
I'm off to Yorkshire! Decent cycling stuff going on down there so I'm looking foreward to it. Have you heard of Arragons cycles in Penrith? They often run small club type things, might spark up some interest to start a proper road beginner club if you sent them a few emails.0

I today received an email implying i'm slagging this club off please correct me if this is slagging off another club & i will stand corrected.0 -
I joined Honister 92 a couple of months ago, and have been on 5 club rides average distance about 60 miles, I hadn't done much befor they are a great bunch of guys i never felt left out or left behind, they dont go eyeballs out just a steady pace, there are usually 2/3 different abillity groups within a ride anyway, plus allways a good "crack" you just do as much as you want then turn back, and guess what you do go further than you would on your own, dont get me wrong it feels hard at times but you do improve quickly. They will offer advice, and help to get you going, I did 70 ish miles yesterday out to Silloth and back in just a small group( 5 of us ) was very hard but I kept up by enlarge, they slowed when I dropped back a couple of times but i found I was able to keep the pace quite well, what I would say is if you are happy doing short rides fair play to you keep it up, but if you want to stretch yourself a bit, maybe improve, get yourself to the Pelican garage on a Sunday morninat 9.30, introduce yourself to a great bunch of guys, (not an ego amongst them), and take it from there.0

Yep i dont doubt they are a good bunch of lads, but join you i dont think will happen as when i got removed from your site for starting another club, i figure myself and the other lad who also got taken off your club site. would not be welcome i was a member of Honister 92 when there were only about 6 riders, and we all wore pink ha, each to their own. i was quite offended by the email, even more so when i asked for substance of proof i had slagged off a club that we advertise highly on our own site. but none could be given, never mind keep up the riding. and catch you later0

Hi Brian - I feel once again (after my recent emails to yourself) that I have to defend our club once more, and perhaps give my side of the story.
Firstly - I deleted you from the forum due to you advertising X-Box upgrades, obviously nothing to do with cycling, and inappropriate on a cycling website. Nothing to do with you starting a new club at all.
Secondly - I feel by you saying that we only do 120 mile rides, is absolutely ludicrous. We vary our cycling rides and intensities like most clubs do, in the months leading up to races and sportives we do train hard, but this is generally done, perhaps on saturdays with like minded abilities and then use the sunday club run for a recovery ride, anything from 50 miles upwards.
Yesterday 2 of us done 95 mile and then this morning we went to the Pelican to meet up with the club for a relaxing club run. There were 4 new faces there again this morning and we are growing all the time, I can't think of many that have joined us for a few club runs and havent been totally addicted and have turned into great club cyclists.
Personally I wish you all the best with Cumbria 42 - but I ask you once more if you need to comment about our club, (one which you never even joined us on a club run!!), to state the facts truthfully and correctly.
Regards
GrantGSLaw0 -
Ah Grant you have signed up to bikeradar,
1st you could have deleted the post not the user.
2, I tried to go along with a club ride but you were all doing long training ride's, for a reliabilty ride.
3, When i state 120 mles its not bringing down your club its speaking in loose terms. and i do mention with my ( fat bum )
4, You dont need to defend your club as no one is talking bad about it. but your are kind of making something out of nothing.
5, Why remove one of our members from your forum it was me who told him to join you. as he was able to ride your 50 + mile trips
6, We used your club ride's off Garmin Connect so people could get used to your riding and pace, untill you also blocked us downloading them from Garmin.
7, Maybe this is the classic case of WE ARE THEY BIGGER CLUB AND ALL SHALL KNEEL BEFORE US..
8, You dont cater for beginner rider's as 50 mile's & up as you state, is what you do!!! we do cater for them and try to get them to a point so they are able to join you.
9, Once again i ask you to copy and paste in email to me where i have spoken in a narrow minded way about your club.
10, Is it not old weasel and big=o that call me a Knob on your site forum and call our club, new members to your site will see what i mean, and you all try to bait me and our club for fun. you dont want to go down this rd son.
All in all Grant you emailed me with no substance in your email, no doubt the lads who registered on our site will have shown you the welcome email which praised your club highly, stating people can join in with us to gain basic fitness, and then feel confident to join Honister92.
But it seems the member i spoke to on this site the other day, where i do say( No doubt they are a good bunch of lads )
Ta ta for now grant and keep up the 50 mile's + good riding. Cumbria42 wishes you all the best for 2011.0 -
Yep - I signed up just recently as you can see from my profile 31st Aug 2006....!!
I'm a bit tired of this now, as are our members - its getting a little bit tedious.
You are more than welcome to be aggrieved that we do longer distances but as you rightly say thats (hopefully) where your club will be good at getting guys to build up to those sort of distances.
Thanks for your detailed reply, its fantastic.

Below is a quote off another member, maybe Cumbria42 is not the only one who thinks this. take a step back and read what the smaller club is saying. from what i can read they are not calling your club at all. i took a visit to their site and yours... they do say people can visit you.
I feel compelled to answer on this due to the nature of you trying to make the smaller club look bad.cyclingmev wrote:hulloooo, i live very near to Whitehaven (about 3 miles outside), so would be interested....there's Honister 92, though they're really fit dudes, and i certainly don't have the confidence to go out to play with them! Me and my Mate joined the Honister92 lads for a spin today, and to be honest had a cracking day the pace was sensible and when anyone needed a number 1 stop or got dropped everyone eased up to wait. Not a single up your own arse rider, everyone was down to earth and enjoyed a bit off banter.
They do indeed do long rides I think today was 5hrs30min-70 miles (the wife wern't happy when I got home :? ) and aparently last weekend was a bit off a killer ride but how many enthuiast road club don't? It's a real shame the two clubs can't see eye to eye as I think Honister geninely tried to do a two tier road rides in the past. Catering for the lower mileage sunday rides but today everyone was up for the greater distance.
I can understand the intrepidation off the prospect off 70mile road ride especially in Cumbria as even a flat ride ain't easy in Cumbria and Cumbria42 does sound like a good idea for lads and young and old alike to to see if they enjoy the sport or indeed just want a couple off hours in the saddle compared to 5/6 posss more?
From my experience of road clubs locally and from talking to local lads The Lakes Road can come across as intimidating so this isn't just a Honister92 thing?0 -

Brian - This is my last comment on the matter, please can I ask you to give it up now and stop altering my posts to make them look childish, it really is now becoming silly, we dont want to let this get out of hand, surely our aim is to encourage people to take up cycling not to put them off by reading childish posts like the recent ones.
Pinarello dude - thanks for the positive comments and hope to see you out again whenever you get time, glad you enjoyed the ride out today. Cheers

Thanks for that Tam, i see by your previous post's your thinking of starting a club up yourself. its a shame really mate that we are united by our hobbie but others cant see that and are intent on trying to spoil the whole experience. i used to teach kids in a local boxing club on my old housing estate and never did we have to argue with other club's.
and never did we call them either self restrain was taught. by starting another club for beginners, i thought at the time start a club and run with this Honister myself at week ends when i'm not out with new riders. it seems by helping others to enjoy what we enjoy, i have to battle with a club i wanted to join. atleast they showed their true colours now rather than when i had paid my entry fee.0
