+1 what the hell do you need a phone on a MTB for apart from phoning the emergency services or ordering a takeaway to be delivered to the campsite. Getting out on the bike is for getting away from the mobile dog leash every one seems to have these days.

Because sometimes I get royally lost and need Google Maps to get my bearings. Also it's great for when you trash your bike and have to sit at the train station for 2 hours :P

google maps is useless unless you are on a road.

In that MBUK gadget holder they gave away this month.

Then that goes in the centre zip pocket on the back of my cycling shirt.

I've not ridden in the wet yet but if I do it'll be placed in to a food bag to keep the water off it... It's insured anyway.

  • i bought a hard plastic case of ebay for my berry when i first got it, then it sits in a ziplock plastic bag in my pocket, have had a few crashes and its been fine in the case, (have a couple of the rubber phone skins too which are good but the plastic case has the screen protection)

i do occasionally stick it in the bag on longer rides but being a creature of habbit it tends to go int he right top pocket of my shorts!

I use mine a lot when out on the bike, put it on satalite view and you can easily see trails on it.

Got satelite imagery maps on my Nokia too. It does come in handy. I often take pictures, but have no idea where I am, at least with the phone i can find out

The problem is they all leave the screen exposed so you can use it but I'm not bothered about that. I just want something to put it for full protection and take out when needed. + its a HTC Desire I have although the same size as iPhone!
  • most likey due to them being a touch screen, would be difficult for them to work through the case, the cases are cheap so you could always get one then plastic weld a bit of peerspex over the gap??

This. You can get a lot of cheapo pay as you go with decent cameras too, ideal for rubbish bikey shots. Much better than the current load of smartphones.

until your saddlebag falls off. It happens, a lot. And you won't know until you stop somewhere further down the trail and think "FUUUUGGGG"

Happened to my buddy a few weeks ago. The saddle bag zipper opened by itself and droped the phone on top of a looong and steep and rocky downhill singletrack...

I learned this lesson the other week on my very first outing on new bike. I thought i was very organised, saddle bag filled with spare innertube, multitool, light, tyre levers.

Got home and noticed the zip open and....nowt in the saddle bag. *sigh*

Stick it in the top compartment of my camelbak, have a soft covering on mine but always put it into the webbed pouch inside the pocket so it doesnt bounce around.

Just stick mine in a sock to protect the screen and bung it in my camelbak
  • in 4th zipped back pocket of jersey, unless the mass of camera, gps, phone drags the back down too much, in which case the phone can go in the sealed pocket of the camelbak.
