The same thing being said on CN.

I'm not sure the numbers add up. It says 22 teams, but I keep reading
the 16 pre selected, plus the 4 above..........
No mention of Sky..........anywhere.

No Garmin either0 -
Don't laugh but it clashes with the Tour of Britain. So Sky would probably send a "B" team to Spain. That said some riders need a Grand Tour in their legs to test them so perhaps the team would like to ride, even if they can't promise too much to the organiser.0

Bit of a shame for Deignan if no Cervelo. He might have tried to build on last year's performance. It's a little like wrestling a gorilla. You don't quit when you're tired. You quit when the gorilla is tired.0

Vacansoleil and Skil have been well and truly shafted this year.0

no garmin?"If I was a 38 year old man, I definitely wouldn't be riding a bright yellow bike with Hello Kitty disc wheels, put it that way. What we're witnessing here is the world's most high profile mid-life crisis" Afx237vi Mon Jul 20, 2009 2:43 pm0

Especially Vacansoleil, they've won in practically every race they've entered.
Forgive me if I'm wrong, but does this include Cofidis in the preselected?0 -
Yes, Cofidis were pro tour at the time the deal was signed in 2008. But remember they took the KOM jersey last year.0

It's the 16 teams + ACA / Cervelo / Garmin / Sky / Katusha and XAC
No Shack or Vacansoliel.
Official, innit.Fckin' Quintana … that creep can roll, man.0 -
I am a bit surprised that the Shack have been snubbed.
I wonder if it's somehow related to the Giro goings on?
Vacansoleil have had it rough this year."Science is a tool for cheaters". An anonymous French PE teacher.0 -
Interesting because with RadioShack there would be an increased chance of selling the TV rights to a US audience, something that most race organisers would be desperate for.
I can't see what BMC are doing there. Evans isn't going to ride the Vuelta as well, is he? Or will he be there for a Worlds tune up?0 -
Makes you wonder what Vacansoleil has done to upset some race organisers. Especially since they spend money sponsoring Paris-Nice to cosy up to ASO, who part own the Spanish race these days.0 -

Guess they got His letter Jan 23 saying they wouldn't be coming.0 -
really surprised at non selection of shack...what a bum deal that company gets...they'll leave the sport before the end of their contract. Good to see Armstrong shown who is boss, but JV is right-sponsors need guarantees to be attracted into the sport -a certain number of hours on live TV will be what Riis and others are putting up on their power point presentations, inducements to potential sponsors.0

Hog Unhappiness:@johanbruyneel: Just got word that TRS got snubbed for a bike race in Spain. Stay tuned for my comments. Gonna be interesting and spicy!
Will make a change, if they are.“We really wanted to ride the Vuelta but we weren’t invited,” RadioShack team spokesman Philippe Maertens told Cyclingnews from the Tour de Suisse.
“The organisers said we didn’t have a strong team on a sporting level, that other teams are better. That’s strange because we wanted to send a very strong roster.”
Maertens refused to name riders who were scheduled for the RadioShack Vuelta roster but Critérium du Dauphiné winner Janez Brajkovic and possibly Levi Leipheimer were likely to be in the team.
Odd reasoning, IMO.
However, I'm afraid the young Shack riders end up paying the price for the old Shack riders myopic ambitions."Science is a tool for cheaters". An anonymous French PE teacher.0 -
I can't imagine Sky will be on anything other than the ragged end of a knackered squad by September.
No sprinter or GC hope, yet they still get the nod over a recent podium-er. 'Tis odd, unless the organisers realise Levi will be cooked after his ToC and TdF exertions.___________________

I wonder if this is why they have been holding back with releasing their tour squad to see if they get a Vuelta invite0 -
Full comments fro Bruyneel. The sooner he is gone the better.

It also occured to me that one of the reasons the Giro was so good was because him and Lance were not there.Contador is the Greatest0 -
Team Sky have in effect the perfect sponsor - love em or loathe them Murdoch's brand is a one of the few global brands in the peleton. The fact that it is a media sponsor in effect triples their pulling power - Team Skty at your race, it's going to be mentioned on Sky TV, written about in(even if it's just amention) in all Murdoch's printed media. As an organiser being able to offer that sort of exposure to advertisers/sponsors (hoardings/roadside barrier banners/ prize sponsors etc) might just tip the balance in your favour
As an aside Team Sky might have worked out how to do a sprint lead out by then0 -

It had nothing to do with being snubbed by Zomegnan at all, oh no.0 -
What amused me about his comments is JB's long history of sticking by team agreements. The name Ivan Basso springs to mind.0

I'm surprised no one has commented upon the implications of this decision, for the remainder of the season.
RS are a stage race team. Other than the Vuelta, there remains only Poland and ENECO, during August and NOTHING during September.
Apart from a couple of HC one dayers in Belgium and France, plus Paris-Tours, the majority of top day races take place in................
...........ITALY.
I can't see a flood of September invites coming through JB's postbox.
Effectively, RS's season mirrors Armstrong's since it all but ends, after the Tour.
Why would riders such Brajkovic's, Marchado etc, wish to remain with a team that has them involuntarily sidelined, from June on?"Science is a tool for cheaters". An anonymous French PE teacher.0 -
Isn't a system based on performance what we used to have before the agreement with a few wildcard teams? If so there were still the same problems then. I wasn't watching the sport at all when it changed to the current system - what was the reason for it? The danger with performances and results being the determining factor for race entry is that it puts even more pressure on riders to get results any way possible.0

Hearing Bruyneel go on about "abuse of power" given his record in the sport is probably the most inintentionally hilarous thing I've ever come across in this wacky sport of ours....My cycle racing blog: http://cyclingapprentice.wordpress.com/
