Further to my last post re tonsillectomy and biopsy of the critter, I have had another bombshell today... Results are in and I have throat cancer! I don't drink much, don't smoke and generally try to keep fit... And get cancer!!
Anyways prognosis is apparently good, with lots if chemo therapy and radio therapy... This has obviously shot this summers riding to hell now too. (after a dire winter of snow and ice!!).. Still if Lance can come back from the big 'C' and win four tdfs I'm hoping to do the same

Cheers for that... Quite a shock... Was just thinking I will soon be on the bike now my tonsills healing!
I have been enjoying the giro in the afternoons as part of my recuperation (must admit to going to bed in afternoons for a craft kip and 'giro time' from the tonsillectomy and having withdrawallsymptoms from the saddle watching the guys ride!
Bit fed up now there's no cycling on the box next week, perhaps chemotherapy and radiotherapy will coincide with the tdf....
You always think that this sort of thing happens to someone else... and then it happens to you!0 -

Four TDFs? If memory serves me correctly, he won 7 :-) Sorry to hear about your cancer, fingers crossed your treatment goes ok so you can get back on the bike :-)2010 Lynskey R230

What after the big 'c' I thought it was four after... If he won 7 after even better mate!
I have enjoyed dipping into these forums and reading many posts over the past weeks... It's great how strongly people defend their opinions and the banter is better than any pub chat over a pint...
Recuperation is going to cost me a fortune in cycling and bike'tartery' mags, otherwise I will go stir crazy!!0 -
Immediate thought was "Oh sh*t!!"
Really sorry to hear about the big C. I'm sure you'll come out of it fine the other side
Take care

Good luck with everything, my friend. There will be others sending you good wishes soon, but they've got to sort out Israel first."There's a shortage of perfect breasts in this world, t'would be a pity to damage yours."0

F**k the Middle East my sympathies lie with Markmod, all the best the mate, hope everything works out well for you and you get to see the tour.0

Thanks all I appreciate the good wishes... Flashheart they were the exact words the misses said to the consultant... I heard myself saying 'oh dear well so what so we do now' but I was thinking something with wording that was a little more colourful... I spose they see all sorts of reactions and hear some very, shall we say, 'choice words'
... I'm worrying about Israel now too Aggieboy!!0 -
I for one can say with confidence I do know how you feel.
I was diagnosed with skin cancer 4 years ago and it hits you like a bus head on.
Needless to say I am still here and have my final check next month to hopefully be given the all clear, its a long and tough road mate but the support, treatment and advice you will receive, if its like mine will be second to none.
Thinking of you, just keep the thought of riding again in your mind.

That's great news JellyBelly... I sail a laser dinghy too and the thought of a summer sail down at Weymouth when I'm sorted will be someting along with the bike ride that will keep me strong...
I used to work all hours godsend and something like this gives you a sense of what's important in life... All work and no play...0 -
Sorry to hear that Markmod.
Cancer is a b@st@rd and I won't pretend to understand what you're going through, I just wish you all the very best your very personal fight,
Get well soon mate.Tail end Charlie

Should we now expect 'Mellow Markmod's' as you recover; a place where BR forumites can have a coffee, a natter and a proper punch-up?
Seriously, sorry to hear of your string of bad luck, Markmod. Stay positive.A fanatic is one who can’t change his mind and won’t change the subject - Churchill0 -
Sorry to hear about the cancer. Like everyone on here I wish you well and hope to hear of your return to good health a.s.a.p.0

Sounds good to me... Have been looking at the Rapha's coffee shop on the Internet... All looks very special and civilised...
When this is all over I am certainly going to look for employment without as much stress as the current one, and I can't think of anything better than working in a small coffee shop (although I understand that job has it pressures too I'm sure)0 -
Hi
Sorry to hear your news. I was diagnosed with cancer exactly one year ago tomorrow. I also went through the whole chemotherapy and radiotherapy thing. It's sh1t, but to be honest, it's not as bad as you think. And a year later I'm feeling fitter than I did before it all.
Good luck with the treatment. And read Lance's book. Whatever else you may or may not think about him, it's an inspirational story.
All the best.0 -
Good luck, hope you come out of it all just fine.0

Thank you I have read it and the second one too... He was really crook with it, secondary lessions in his lungs and brain too...
Apparently tonsil/ throat is one of the more none 'spreading' types of the 'c'... The tonsil is gone (little bast@4d) and I have to have chemo/ radio for the tonsil bed (which is cancerous too still- it didn't deserve a bed!)
MRI will show the extent in the neck... I have no lumps and bloods are clear.
Thanks again all and to you Oaky, I appreciate your thoughts... I was told tonsillectomy was a fate worse than death at 44 but have almost bounced back after a week from that one... It was bad, imagine your tongue being slit at the back then pulled on by two cars until it was hanging by a thread, which is how eating felt... The first icecream I had after, was better than an anything I have ever experienced before... And I mean anything!!
I am not looking forward to radio burning throat again... But to be fair have felt like sh£7 for the last couple of months, chemo will continue this longer I expect0 -
Here's another set of best wishes for you.
If it's any consolation to you, you are not alone in suffering. I'm due for an appointment with the Man With The Glove next monday. If I'm 'lucky' it'll only be a twisted or torsioned testicle, the thought of having my scrote incised open and my testicle stitched to it in order prevent future problems does not appeal to me!0 -
Hi Cressers,
thanks for that, hope you will be fine with the op matey, and no, it's no consolation to me you having trouble too, I'd rather you didn't have problems obviously!! I tell you what the NHS is a superb institution, I cannot fault my treatment so far... I cannot see how you would have any better private?
Good luck again.0 -
Hi Markmod,
Wishing you all the best mate, chin up and all that !!!!

Good luck, you sound so positive in the face of this bad news......good on ya!0

Good luck mate. I know what you're going through and I'm sure you'll come through it and what's more, be a better person for it. It really changes your perspective on things.
If you need a chat etc about it then feel free to drop me a PM!

Markmod
The chemo - at least my experience of it - isn't that dreadful. They give you drugs to cope with the sickness and stuff. The worst of it is the small things - the tiredness, what it does to your sense of taste etc - but all of that's just temporary. You learn how to deal with it, and by what it sounds like you've been through already, you'll manage just fine. Just keep telling yourself it's making you better.
If I can tell you anything else, just ask.0 -
You are all very kind people. I went on the internet last night to research my cancer and scared myself completely witless! Think I wil just stick around bikeradar and forums, and not do anymore research.
Just watching the news from Whitehaven Cumbria and the shootings of a number of innocent people just going about the town. These poor guys didn't even have the chance of survival I have been given... Real sad when someone one 'breaks' with access to guns, why take others with them??0 -

I'm real sad to hear this Mark.
From the bottom of my heart I wish you good luck.0
