Just follow the Langsett Barn VC car park sign 8)
There are speed cameras when entering the village (40mph)If you travelling down the A616 from the M1 there are average speed cameras every few hundred metres.

Yup, Stocksbridge Bypass is a PITA. Thanks for clarifying that Ibbo, saves me doing it :D

No idea Mick as I've never one it.

If the weather in Langsett is the same as it is here today, the trail will be getting a good watering!!! Forecast has changed to heavy rain today, 2 nice warm days and a chance of light showers on Tuesday

yeah rain not stopped i think since getting home this morning at 6am so might end up with changing tyres to my muddy x's.

As regards time wise i was thinking that if it going to take around 4 hours or more i was thinking that i might start at fairholmes around 12 o'clock and then head off to langsett on a steady pace to meet up with you guys then head back with you and then maybe do the extra bit if i'm upto it. It's just that i have to be up for 5am the next day and hopfully not over lay and be late in to work.

I'll have to think about it more and make a decision on the starting place

I don't think full mud tyres will be needed Mick, the trail has had a lot of resurfacing work done in the last couple of years, it's been dry for a while so any rain should soak in quickly and according to the forecast there's 2 days of nice weather before we ride so it's got chance to dry out a bit.

Our lasses Uncle lives in an old swing bridge house next to the canal and I've often wondered about having a canoe to drop into the water and going off exploring

    yeah sounds good :D
in 2008 i attempted to do the Caledonian canal - Fort William to Inverness with the same company but sadly we the weather stopped us completeing it as we only got to the start of Loch Ness.

I nearly did buy a canoe but instead changed my car.

not sure if you're just allowed to drop a canoe into the canal and go, I might have to email British Waterways and find out. I saw some inflatable kayaks a couple of years ago when we were in Cowes which looked OK, not sure how much fibreglass ones are.

i do think for canoeing in england you need to get some form of license but not sure.

here's a online store that i've used before to get stuff, there pretty good

i've had probably the best trip i've done was this one right up in the north west of scotland.

    Hi Guys,

Time wise the run fom from langsett to Fairholmes is only about 4 miles so 8 miles round trip in all and i'm quessing should only take about an hour to get to Fairholmes and an hour back + 1/2 at the cafe, the run up Hagg Side and back down to Fairholmes can't take much more than an hour either so i'm quessing if you did the whole thing about 4 hours including stops.

Hopefully Ibbo will be along in a minute with some proper timings.

It might be only 4 miles over the tops from Langsett to the top of Howden Res, but the Visitor's Centre is about another 3-4 miles further on from that plus whatever the extra loop is. Should still be very do-able in 4 hours tho.

EDIT: read your post again Mike, and I think you've already included the extra, sorry.

think lansett to fairholmes may be a bit more than 4 miles,i was out with ibbo a while back for cutgate, out an back from langsett, not quiet to fairholmes, just up to a small stream crossing the other side of a steep descent and clocked 12 miles there an back.
    route here,if it helps

Well i've just put half of the route into memory-map ie langsett to fairholmes going along the gravel track along side the reservior's which i think is the better route to fairholmes mostly downhill, is on it's own atleast 10 miles so even if we went the same way back that's 20 miles :o so if the return leg goes via the road section back along side the reserivor's which i find the better way round ie clockwise then maybe that would add another mile or two on to it.

So your looking at between 20 - 23 miles i reckon

That sounds to me as it's going to be just the trip to Fairholmes and back then, 23 miles on that sort of terrain is a good 4 hour ride, don't you think?

Time is ok with me as i've got some stuff being picked up in the morning

I've plotted the route onto my memory map software and it's saying 22.5 miles and that's with us going clockwise around the reservior's

well the route around the reservior's pretty easy so you be able to rest your legs on that part of the route
