    What happened?

Nothing. He just got beat. Thought he was the best sprinter left by far but I guess being in the break all day tired him out. Still got second.

To be fair he didn't do a lot wrong, he allowed everyone else to chase and keep the group together but then one moment of hesitation when Belletti went and his chance had gone. That's how it goes sometimes.

It's a race without clear leading team. Saxo is defending pink, but Porte is clearly not main favourite for the overall. So, who is? Cervelo? Liquigas? Astana? BMC? Karpets is only a minute behind Basso in the GC....

Exactly. Liquigas were setting the tempo when Karpets went and kept him at 1 minute for while. But then it's as if they thought "hang on, this isn't our job..."

And now Karpets has clawed back some crucial time, on a flat transitional stage.

But is he going to be threat on the steep slopes of the Zoncolan? He'll be nowhere near the podium in the end.
It's a little like wrestling a gorilla. You don't quit when you're tired. You quit when the gorilla is tired.

Who knows in this Giro? Who even knows who'll be fighting for victory by the time we get to the Zoncolan. Could still be Porte v Arroyo v Tondo.

Nope, sorry, that was it; the Giro and me in sleep mode. Too many late nights in California.
Karpets? Well we may have laughed, but he just pulled back 2 and a half minutes, without a huge effort. Odd Katusha tactics, though.

At this stage it's also about convincing your team to work for you. Before today the top 10 would have looked difficult, but now he could argue at dinner tonight that he has a chance of a top 5 place.

164 riders classified but Bobridge not among them. Maybe he's withdrawn too?

Katusha wasted a good chance to gain some more time; on Barbotto italian RAI called Damiani and asked him what they were doing and he said they were gonna check after the end of that climb to see if they had to stop the 2 guys at the front but they didnt.

if they had dropped back earlier the chase from behind would have up tempoed is my take
