I've been wanting to give whey protein a go for sometime now after hearing some good reviews from others, is it worth giving it a go? Or will it be un-beneficial to getting fitter on the bike? Any advice much appreciated :)

if you know exactly what you want....or have somone on hand who knows what you want then loads of people suggest myprotein.co.uk but it's got so much different stuff on there it's not really for first timers.

The big names in the UK protein industy tend to be either Maximuscle or Sci-Mx, but to be honest if your just starting out then things like BodyFortress from Holland & Barrett should be fine.

(when I say big names I mean the more commercial names, i'm sure there's someone on here who will moan saying superproteinanabolicit'snotreallysteriodsXXXsuperdrink is much better, blah blah blah)

As for being un beneficial on the bike the whole bulking up/power to weight issue isn't really going to effect you much if your just taking a bit to tone up, if you want to start taking it seriously then you might find that things like that come into play

It'll assist with 'feeding' muscle, after excercise... But, it wont make you fitter!

I find the Whey Protine from LAMUSCLE.COM very very tastey! Like real milk shakes.
Also it hasnt got any artifical sweetners or additives. Its 100% pure whey.

It helps your muscles recover quicker.
Ever had a hard session and the next day your legs are realy aching?
Well with extra protine in your diet aching muscles are less common.

You can also get Soy Protine which is more "slow release" but is realy disgusting IMO.

Well I am converted. I never realised that if you typed "whey protein gas" into google that you would get hits on "whey protein gas". I must tell everyone of this new found wonder tool called google that will find subjects for you when you specifically ask for them.
Thank you, oh wise and beneficial one.

no no no! don't waste your money on branded stuff, try either www.myprotein.co.uk or www.bulkpowders.com both of which will do very very high quality protein (much better than the foul tasting stuff from Holland and Barrett) and it will be much cheaper.

I would like to add that the stuff from Holland and Barrats is dog-awful with water. You *have* to drink it with milk pretty much because of the taste.

I have some from myprotein now, perfectly mixable with water. Quite like drinking it actually.

for muscle recovery best is a combination of complex carbohydrates and proteins in the ratio 4:1 (app. a multivitamin/mineral pill post work out also helps muscle recovery)...don't think proteins alone make sense if you're just after cycling (if you do wheights then ti's another topic)

I bought a couple of tubs of the H&B stuff when it was half price, almost finished the 2nd one now and i HATE it, tastes horrible with water and with milk, tends to clump together as well. Will check out myprotein once its gone...

I use Impact Whey Protein from MyProtein. Seems reasonably priced. Last bag was ~ 10.99 iirc (with 4 quid postage).

I have been using this stuff and its great.

I have the chocolate flavour and it tastes really nice (better than forgoodness shakes as a comparison). Mixes really well - I just shake it up with milk and a couple of ice cubes in a Powerade bottle. :)

I did get some cheaper whey and had to drink lots of water to stop myself getting really bad stomach cramps. No such problems with this stuff.

Can I ask what makes you say that?
