A old B&W WW1 German film - 'all quiet on the Western front' - brilliant. Think it was remade.

Yes it was with John Boy off The Waltons and Ernest Borgnine in the late 70's,not quite the same film but it was ok.

I agree with Master and Commander, that was great.

    For indulgence, Inglorious basterds.
For heart wrenching, The Deer Hunter and Sophies Choice.

And all time classic, realism and pathos Rambo, First Blood part II. :D

A stunned silence fell over the learned gathering, as dmclite ventured an ill-advised comment.

"Quite right," added another, "and an arsewipe."

Bill Shakespeare knew a thing or two about plotting and dialog. And Lawrence Olivier's 1944 Henry V is lauded as something of a classic.

    The cruel Sea

I loved The Cruel Sea and Jack Hawkins, however, I read the book and found that to be far superior and I can't get over how sanitized the film is.

Also, can I recommend a TV movie called The Lost battalion.

The sequel - The Pacific - is currently showing on Sky Movies. So far it's not as good, but still very much worth a watch.

I'm watching that as it happens mate. That's what made me buy BoB on DVD.

You're right it is a good watch.

No, sorry, it wasn't me, it was the gathering of Victorian gentlemen that sometimes control my thoughts and actions via a hole in the space-time continuum.

If they ever bother you again, just tell them that women are going to get the vote in their lifetimes. That usually shuts them up.

Not my genre but I recall enjoying The Dirty Dozen and Bridge Over the River Kwai in my youth. More recently, does Blackadder Goes Forth count?

The Band of Brothers was great TV. You got to know (some only briefly) the characters and how the war affected them. Very moving at times.

I've now watched 8 episodes of the Pacific and haven't a clue who the charactors are. They all look the same. We see Sgt. John Basilone at the beginning, see a few brief scenes in between and now I've watched a whole episode of what happens to him. I really didn't care coz I hadn't built up a relationship with him or others...at the moment I've forgotten what happened to PFC Robert Leckie.

However, it's a great visual war series, but ultimately action not character based.

Band of Brothers is definitely one of the greats. I love the opening conversations with the characters as they are now, followed by the sweeping theme music. Never tire of it.

I've just watched episode 9 of The Pacific - Okinawa and have to say it's one of the very best war scenes I've ever seen. If you think Saving private Ryan was bloody wait until you watch this. It's mud, blood, rotten bodies and maggots.

I've complained that The Pacific is not as good as BoB, but this had me shaking my head in disbelief.

10/10 for this episode. 5/10 for the other 8. Still to watch the final.

I'm just annoyed at Sky for trying to make me watch Sky MOvies when I don't want it. Pacific is a TV show and should be on SkyOne at no extra cost.... have a word Bradders!

A walk in the sun is my favourite war movie. Saw it way back in the 60s and it still stands up for me.
