    IMHO no it isn't.

I think Saving private Ryan was ground breaking and was horrible viewing at the cinema.

The worst part being the two soldiers fighting hand to hand, heart wrenching stuff.

Pretty Village, Pretty Flame is an excellent war film about Yugoslavia.

I'm also a bit of a sucker for resistance films, so Operation Daybreak about the assassination of Heydrich in the Czech Republic during WW2 was good (apart from the terrible music).

I'm not too keen on the invading army films such as the Longest Day/Bridge Too Far, because it just seems to me that in those circumstances your fate is so far out of your own hands - either a bullet is going to end up lodged in your head or isn't, and I'd hate to be in that sort of situation myself.

Are you all nuts? I've seen The Great Escape, beats you all. Unless you're a fan of Escape To Victory. Sly Stallone and Pele. Fact.

The best war films use war as a plot/character device or background for more interesting occurances - Deer Hunter being the obvious example.

Never seen the Deer Hunter. Which war is it set in?

I agree with what you say, which is why I like films like PVPF and Daybreak. I just wish the tragic ending to Daybreak were fiction, rather than fact.

Looking at this thread reminds me of how many really good war films there have been.

Das boot and Deerhunter in particular.

The reason I chose private Ryan wasn't so much for the storyline/plot but the groundbreaking realism of the battle scenes. It was made by a brilliant film maker at the top of his game.

Having said that the Russian roulette scene in deerhunter is unbearable to watch.
