Odd Welts

Rode a very wet, muddy and windy Sportif yesterday (fastest time on the day too, I believe!) And have just noticed that I have several small red welts across my chest and side and one massive one on my back. These line up with my HR strapandthe large one with the plastic adjusting buckle on it. Now, I do wash the strap, though probably not as often as I should, but I have never seen anything like this in 10 years of training with a heart rate monitor.

So, what are they and how do I get rid of them?

Sure they're not from the dodgy dungeon session with Miss Wiplash the night before?

Sorry.... Just sounds like irritation because the straps were probably rubbing mud, sweat and rain into your skin as you rode, or perhaps, if yuo haven't washed the straps for a while and now that the weather's wamer, mildew has grown on them, which was rubbed into yuor skin. I'd give them a really good wash

I once managed to get a fungal infection from wearing my HR strap too much as it trapped the moisture. (I was doing about 25 hours of training a week then)

If they don't go away, go and see your GP

That's next on my list now, to be honest it's beyond a joke. I've got about 10 things that look like spots all around my chest and back and two big sore patches (one on chest one on back) with loads of little blisters on. They're constantly sore and keeping me awake at night.

I'm considering putting it off though as I don't wanna be told to rest when I'm in great form and want to do a sub 6:30 fred whitton and etape du dales in the next couple of weeks!

Try Hibiscrub (aka surgical scrub, or Chlorhexidine Gluconate)

That was recommended to me by a surgeon friend for something similar, but if that doesn't clear things up quickly then certainly see the GP.
  • Turns out I have shingles! Just a coincidene that its at HR strap level!
