Why are there so many different rear suspension designs ?

Nothing, as long as it stays within the fatigue limit of the material.0
-
And I guess you have to trust that the designers took that into account. Do you get paint cracking though?0
-
Possibly, but the flex is usually a lot smaller than you imagine.0

Because of the length of the chainstay, I get that. But I also imagine that the angle between the chainstays and the seatstays must increase slightly as well? Does this affect things, or is it too small to worry about? And if you were running it SS, would you get loose spots in the chain when the shock is compressed?0

The shock is pivoted in many cases to allow the distance and angle changes.
It would not work with SS. SS can only work with full suss if you use a tensioner, or have the pivot concentric to the BB.0 -
Not sure how my mate is running his then. I'm pretty sure he's running it without a tensioner, and 100% that its SS and a softail similar to that one.0

are the mongoose systems effectively high single pivots with a load of linkages running around the bottom?Rock Lobster 853, Trek 1200 and a very old, tired and loved Apollo Javelin.0

Indeed they are. The bottom bracket hangs off a linkage between the front and rear triangles - sort of like the Idrive system.0
