I suppose it'll be a kick in the teeth for those saying the world is warming up to fast if it helps re freeze the polar ice caps for a short while

Not at all - it'll only be a short term effect and have no impact on climate change.

Sky over Chester has the beginnings of a beautiful sunset. Just hope the silica in the ash doesn't get sucked into my lungs. I don't want to cycle holding my breath for a few days.

Yes. All you have to do is heat it to 1000 degrees C and it turns back into lava.

I'm going to have to hold my breath for my 4-hour bike ride today.

Hurrah for clear, quiet skies; unslashed by contrails, for stranded chavs kept from re-entering the UK or from flying abroad just to binge drink, for chavlets who's school trip to Thailand is postponed (my generation was happy with a coach trip to Longleat), for knocking The Debate off the top of the news agenda, for nature showing us who's really in charge!

Now UK airspace closed until at least 13.00 on 17/04.

UK airspace aint really closed is it. If it was closed that'd mean not one single plane was allowed in the sky or anything that could fly.

But you won't be reaching New York in a Piper cub...

And it may not be over for a while yet...

At least it's safe for us to suck in gobfuls. The ash isn't expected to descend from its present 11km high until at least the weekend.

On that website -very useful one too - the only place with dodgy air at the moment is Leominster with high ozone. Wonder if the sensor is near a funfair's dodgems?

    I think you'll find that it's 01:00hrs.

Think I'll bring a dust mask home with me, whenever the flights start, as the UN Health Agency now states we should stay indoors if the ash starts to settle!

I've still got some that I bought in '05 when Bird Flu was a concern, they're probably about as much use as a nosegay would've been during the time of the Black Death but something would be better than nothing.

I wonder what would happen if the UK did get a light dusting? Apparently a light dusting can cause all manner of problems, especially given our unprepared infrastructure.

I was in Caernarfon town square today, and there were 2 kids crying.
Their mother then turned up, covered in grey volcanic ash.

I asked one of the kids "Oh, wots occuring?"

    He replied..."Mums gone to Iceland..."
  • Where's the beautiful sunsets this glass dust is supposed to be causing?

    Another disappointment for Brown's Britain.

Not half as disappointing as watching a British sunset instead of the Mallorcan one I was supposed to see tonight
None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.

  • Is volcanic ash good for gritting with?

If it is why hasn't Gordon Brown got people up there in hot air balloons with big nets to catch it all. So we can stock pile it ready for the cold weather and snow that the after affects of the volcano will bring this winter.

fairly simple, because next winter, Gordon Brown won't have anything to do with the running of the country.......hopefully!!

So far, we can't even transfer to a boat as the cranes are not certified for personnel transfers!
I have about £200, so should be ok for tooth paste and razors for a few months!

just some 'expert' on Sky news so I would not hold it as certain !! but he definitely definitely mentioned that some companies were thinking of shutting some rigs down - just getting supplies out is apparently already causing some problems ??

Had a fantastic sunset to look at on my way to Winslow the other night...... never seen the sun so red. My GF would have loved it, she's a sucker for a sunset
