The thing with overtaking is that you know its a race before your victim.

If I see any cyclist up ahead, whether thats someone lycra clad on an s works or someone in a yellow highway jacket on a 1990's coventry eagle, I put the burners on a bit and hunt them down.

They carry on ambing along, much like I was before I noticed them in the distance, and dont know we're racing until I've got the jump on them and gone.

When I've been over taken I always make sure that I up the pace and cling on for dear life (with the attempted effortless look), so they know they only had me because I wasn't paying attention.

    That's not racing. That's being a muppet.

Bloody hell, some guy on the A34 overtook me today, I thought what an idiot, so I overtook him at 33mph on the flat. And that taught him not to overtake me again!

Nah this guy today was really strong, large saddle bag, 28c tyres by the looks of it, and was off like clappers, overtook me, I caught up to him and stayed behind, I overtook as I do with everyone though as I like to test myself abit. I had to do about 33mph on the flat to overtake him!

If you like testing yourself and overtaking people why don't you do some time trialling?

It may also give you more experience on how to deal with being overtaken :D
I have had lots of practice in this in TTs I've done to date. You can even hear them coming if they are running a disc wheel (unmistakeable buzzing in the ears).

On the odd occasion I do pass someone I always let on to them.

Had a small victory at the weekend though as I overtook one of those massive forklift things whilst on a 10 mile TT. Felt good even though he was only doing about 20mph by my guess. Must be something to do with man beating large internal combustion engine type thing.
Must admit I didn't say a cheery 'hello' to the driver.

I can't see why people get so bent out of shape about overtaking/being overtaken.

I don't get overtaken often, mainly because I'm on quiet country roads, but when I am I normally a get a pleasant greeting and respond likewise. Simple really. I'm not going to go racing after them, I'm out on my bike for me, because I enjoy it.

So relax and have some fun, the only person you need to race is yourself.

So if you think you're a hero for overtaking an unfit 50 year old just coming to the end of a 60 mile run (that'll be me), then I guess you're a hero then. Much nicer to just say hello.

Well I was thinking about doing TT's, I was thinking of doing Manchester Wheelers club 10 Thursday night next week.

I need to get my power up abit more cause I want to beat my time last year of 25:46, dunno if 290W average for 77kg would do that? I still had 7bpm in it last night when when I did that, as I can usually hold 179-180 and I averaged 173.

I actually find the problem of when to let someone know you are about to overtake... not on the commute but on a weekend ride (on my own) if I'm approaching someone quickly I wish to say hi because it's nice thing to do. Picture this: I'm pegging it up a quiet country road with my quiet bike and have this thing were I end up inadvertently shouting HELLO at the poor bugger. Nearly had a couple of old fellas fall off their bike in shock
Trying to learn to approach correctly but think my mouth becomes disconnetced from my brain while i'm huffing and puffing along :D
Question: Why do so many cyclists not stop at red lights? You would if you were in a car...

I see little point in gloating when you've overtaken someone ( something I've little experience of :( ) when for all you know they could have been out for hours and already done more miles than you could imagine.
