Overtaking Road Bikes

I'm a newbie to this biking thing and recently bought a Trek 7.5FX for my 11 mile commute to work. I'm reasonably fit, so can pelt along at a fair whack. I'm assuming that there must be some etiquette for people on hybrids overtaking lycra clad people on roadbikes - as I did it yesterday and the comment I got at the next set of red lights was 'don't ever have the disrespect to overtake me on that piece of sh1t again'. Should I not overtake other bikes?

Don't worry, s/he was only jokin with you.

    Anyhoo from what i can gather etiquette goes;

    1. Spot roadie
    2. real him in
3.Pass (this must be done with no look of effort on your face)
4.Stop pedalling, look back in a knowing way.
    5. Blast off into the sunset.

    8)

If they don't like it maybe they should train more

PS, no-one likes getting overtaken, i got left for dead the other day but my excuse is that i was in jeans and a thick coat/jumper thing with no cycling shoes on spd pedals, lucky i wasn't in my cycling stuff really otherwise i'd have to fall back on the real reason :lol:

PPS, Only one of them said hello :( ......

But that's a different thread

And of course you should overtake all the gear and no idea types. The trick is to do it so they get stopped at the next lights when yo have gone through on green.

Ha, ha, that's funny  I'd just do it faster next time. Make sure you look as nonchalant and relaxed as possible

'don't ever have the disrespect to overtake me on that piece of sh1t again'

    Woah!

There's etiquette in so far as giving them space as you go past and not cutting right in on their front wheel, but if this fella's in a tizz over being overtaken by a hybrid, maybe he should just ride faster

Or maybe he's just embarrassed of his lack of fitness.

He'll never live it down

    Name and Shame !! :D
  • while im not one to resort to physical conflict, pushing him over when he just clipped in, pulling away from the lights would have been hilarious and incredibly fitting! =D

I only hope he was Joking though as that is knobbery taken to the Nth degree.

of course you can overtake other bikes youve got as much right to be riding on the road as them, just because they might have a three grand bike and all the kit doesnt neccessarily mean they are gonna be fast riders, surely that bloke was joking if he wasnt well what a prick! anyway a quick dice with someone on the way to work can liven up an otherwise boring commute, a good rider on a hybrid should beat a mediocre rider on a road bike so go for it.

    Hi all,

Sorry to upset you all, their is ettiquette,

1, call out coming through (so you give notice of forthcoming p***ed off event)
2, As others have said must look relaxed
3, casually ask if he would like some help to repair his bike as something is odviously broken
4, when you get to the lights offer your assisstance as there is a hill coming up would he like you to wait for him and then push him up.
5, If it's me your coming past (don't)

To John Stevenson - all the gear no idea (that's me) thread with that heading.

I bought a bike about a month ago managed about 3 miles each way first time out (with all the gear) now average 17.6 mph i'm sure many of you could pass me (i wear the gear coz i sweat but also so that i am taken more seriously by those tin cans)

    2 options on this one.

Let him pull away at the lights and do it again

    Or,

Half wheel him talking all the time while accelerating in a seemingly effortless move.
Once he starts panting leave him for dead

PS: I am a roadie. Everyone is fair game.
None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.

You need to post this on the Silly Commuting Racing thread - they will love it!

You have achieved a scalp without even trying. Respect!

... but a serious point - make sure that you nail it, if you do the overtake. It is dangerous and annoying to only just make the move and then cut in (but your description sounds quite OK to me).

'don't ever have the disrespect to overtake me on that piece of sh1t again'.

What a load of old bollox!! I think this is just a way of pretending NOT to tell us how fit you think you are! No one would ever say that, they would just blank you for the NOBHEAD you are

How embarrassing - maybe you have found the culprit right here on the forum!

Just ignore this type of insult, nstevo. Some know-it-alls seem to be above any newbie posts, despite feeling the need to scour the forums for them.

Did you know that everyone was a newbie once (possibly including the lycra-clad scalp)?

You should have said, "That's the least of your worries son, I've just come from your house where I've shagged your wife".

Then winked at him and rode away.

When I was crawling back from a slightly too-long ride, some fecker overtook me while swigging from a can of Carling. That stung the ego a little bit  :D

I've just remembered. Years ago I was riding through Betws-y-Coed on my pannier-laden BSO, wearing civvy shorts and trainers, and I rode past dozen upon dozen of roadies who I later found out were on the Wild Wales Challenge ride. I couldn't figure out why they were ambling along so slowly but they must have been mighty disrespected :D

And it's been a while since I read Rough Ride but I seem to remember Paul Kimmage being overtaken by "a bloody Fred" and he was a bit pissed off

    Erm...

the only way you can say it was an 'idle threat' is if you dish out abuse again and don't get banned. As it is that's called a 'final warning'. Just let me know if you need help with anything else.

Perhaps they were just out to challenge themselves on a challenge ride because it was a fun thing to do and they didn't feel the need to spend 5 years training to elite cat status to do it? Maybe the fresh air, camerarderie, scenery and moderate exercise were sufficient? Maybe they were doing it for charity and hadn't done much cycling before? Maybe they were middle-aged guys out to lose weight and get fit? But maybe they just weren't as awesome as you?

I think a lot of people are mistaking 'roadies' with pro cyclists. The former are people who like to ride road bikes and in terms of ability have absolutely nothing in common. So when you are gloating about your roadie scalp, you might want to consider that whilst they might be ATGNI, they also could have been:

    15 or 75
    A newbie
    Recovering from an injury
    Finishing a hilly 100 miler
    Out for a recovery spin
    Heart rate zone training
Out for a leisure ride and enjoying the view
Just not very good but enjoying themselves

I like some road rivalry as much as the next man but I've always thought gloating about a scalp is just a bit crap, whether that's commuters vs roadies or vice versa. It only counts if you go up against people who have trained for the same event and even then bragging about winning isn't very sporting.

I did a cracker then other day..

Followed this guy but didn't over take, realised a big hill was coming and didn't fancy him coming back past me.. Anyway, got to the hill and flew past and didn't see him again, laughed all the way home.
