ive used it all last year during races, as this is what i thought it was intended for!!!

If it tastes ok and is doing what you want it to do - stick with it. A bit of protein won't do you any harm, and otherwise its basically a standard sports drink isn't it?

nope - its an energy product for use while exercising, but as with any product of this type it can also be taken before and after, to refuel/recover.

Its a drink mainly for during but also after exercise. Its designed for endurance and recovery. I can also recommend the High5 Energy Source 2:1 which is purely carbs. It depends a lot on what kind of riding you do but I'd check out the Race Faster Guides on the high5 website which explains how to use the products and how they work - link www.highfive.co.uk
  • I'd agree with incog24 that if you like the taste and it doesn't repeat on you then go for it. Depending on the distances you ride and the general state of your diet, you may question the effectiveness of various products. Basically, it comes down to 'each to their own' unless you're a top notch rider whose diet and fluid intake is controlled.

I've been using Zipvit's energy drink elite as it claims to have 'fast acting carbohydrates' but at the end of the day I like the taste and it doesn't cost as much as more well-known brands!

I use it and rate it.

bumf from the website is pretty clear:

EnergySource 4:1 is an advanced fuel for use during exercise. It contains 4 parts carbohydrate to 1 part protein. Reseach shows that this ratio can provide endurance athletes with more energy than carbohydrate alone and that protein protects muscles from being broken down and used as fuel during endurance training and competition

I used a free sample of Zipvit for a Road Race last Sunday and it tasted okay. However the most noticable affect was after I had finished the race whereas I am normally ravenous, this time I was not hungry which indicates to me that the drink supplied all my energy requirements.

    Check out this interview:

    http://competitorradio.competitor.com/2 ... eukendrup/

Loads of stuff covered here, including the magic glucose/fructose mix in energy drinks, views on the 4:1 carb/protein energy drinks, caffeine, strength training and a lot of other topics! Jeukendrup is not convinced by the carb/protein mixes but is very positive about glucose/fructose mixtures of carbs in energy drinks.

+1 to what Maddog says, I use it on longer rides (over 50miles) and really rate it. In addition, it can be used as a recovery drink but it's worthy of note that H5 actually make something specifically for that purpose, hence whoever told the OP that 4:1 was just a recovery drink was just plain wrong.
