  • If you're looking for some great photos then I think that wide open mag, dirt and singletrack are all great. Singletrack has been running photographers gallery's over the past few issues, showing shots with a description which I think is cool. Dirt does a photo issue each year as well which is just brilliant. Wide Open Mag also has a flickr group which has loads of nice stuff in it.

I love taking photos and riding. One of my favourite parts of the ride is coming back, having a big coffee (with hot chocolate) and downloading the days photos. I just have a Canon G9 but will probably upgrade to something like the GF1 when the price comes down a bit. I was planning a DSLR but with all my guiding gear in my pac it's too much for carrying.

    Some pics.

Photography is my first passion,I've been shooting for 10 years and currently use a Nikon D200 with a variety of lenses http://www.kgimages.co.uk or part of this team http://www.imagesofessex.co.uk/

never shot any mountain bikers though  i'll try and get round to doing that this year

Doombrain - is that vignetting on your photo PP or from the lens? Cool Shot by the way

    Thanks :)

It's a little of both really. It was shot with a 17-40mm f/4L which will vignette slightly on a 5D, the rest was software.

I work in the imaging industry and I’m lucky enough to have the latest software like CS4 and 5 (when it's ready) but i mainly use apple aperture for batch processing.
    LOL road riding.

doug@basqueMTB.com, nice shots man. might get a camera like that myself. i'm scared of snapping mine!
    LOL road riding.
  • Cheers Doombrain! It's great for biking because it's a good size to always have in your pack. I think that I'll probably upgrade to the GF1 eventually because the Canon's getting old, has a scratch on the lens and has started doing funny things electrically like automatically going to AV mode when it's in manual and the flash is put on!

doug - your photos are very good. I would rate them in the opposite order they are shown in..... the last one of the daisy with the biker in the background OOF is really excellent. I shall certainly be copying that shot myself!

My 1DsMk2 arrived today....but as yet no lens.... aaaaagggghhhh!
  • Cheers! Strangely enough that's the order that I took them in. I.e. latest pics being the ones you like the best! Must be getting better :-)

Bendylegs - nice pic.... whether my photographic skills are in question or not, my riding certainly is.... getting air like that for me aint on the cards! Hence why I want to go to a DH meet (camera and no bike)
  • pilsburypie to be honest it was the second time i visited the downhill course, the first attempt was very blurry and dark in the trees

laws now apply to photographing children

Really? Can you point me at the reference as my wife is a photographer and prefers a candid style of photography which inevitably often ends up with kids in the shot. As far as we've been advised, kids have no greater right under law to privacy than an adult. The fact that everyone assumes you're a paedophile if you get within a hundred yards of a kid that isn't your own with a camera is a separate issue.

If this has changed like you're suggesting, would be interested to get the chapter and verse before there are problems.

go to bit about Permissions and Children
    and http://www.stop43.org.uk/ & http://www.sirimo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/ukphotographersrights-v2.pdf might help.
further reading on photography and law is strongly recommended.
i have copy of photography and the law bit out of digital camera magazine February 08 issue if anyone wants.

    Some great shots on here!

Looking to start out in photography and will most probably purchase a Canon Eos 1000d late next week which I am looking forward too, was looking at the Nikon D3000 but then realised it does not have live view which is a feature I like. I will take alot of mtb shots in the summer and probably post some up on here for everybody to have a look at and give feedback and advice.

One of the best ways to improve is to join this Flickr group
    http://www.flickr.com/groups/onephotoeveryday/
It's simple, you take one photo everyday and post it up for all to see and judge the best one at the end of each month.

You can take as many as you want but can only post only one in the pool.
Been forced to take a shot a day makes you think about it a lot more when you need to get the right shot at the right time.

Here's my best of this year so far IMH

That's the sort of shot you'd have in a frame - fantastic.

Desperately need to get out on my bike with camera....

Join our pool only about 1 in 20 shots are bike related.

There are some weird one's  who like taking shots of themselves in different poses every day I just don't get that but each to their own I guess.

Just getting started as well, got a Canon 10d and a selection of tamron and sigma lenses (you lucky L-series fellas), now accumulating flasahes and tripods and what have you.

I'll link some photos when I get ut of the office and have access to 'em. I'm starting with product and still life stuff for now, then plan to get started with people and action. Too many variables to worry about right now!

I did not state that it was illegal just that laws apply and that you have to be careful taking pictures of children

Also a bit of more info here taken from The UK Photographers Rights Guide

It is not illegal as such to photograph children in a public place, however in some circumstances it will almost certainly draw the attention of the police and may result in the photographer being investigated. In Scotland it may be treated as a breach of the peace. It is advisable to get at least verbal consent from the parents wherever possible.

Many organisations and local authorities involved in children’s sporting and other activities have, as part of their child protection policies, strict rules about photography at events. It is worth inquiring about the policy before attempting to take photographs at such events, even if you are the parent of a child taking part.

I've got a D90 but rarely mix the two hobbies. Would like to do so more though - what bags/cases are you guys using to take your SLRs out on rides with you?

Hi all, 1st post here on bike Radar...
Interesting to hear theres so many others who are combining the same two passions as I am...
I have a Canon 1000d, and usually reserve my photography until apres-ride but took it out in my camelback for the first time a couple of weeks ago in the White Peak. I got frustrated though trying to combine enjoying the trail with keeping wanting to stop and take photos. The images I did get ended up looking like run-of-the-mill snapshots :(

Here's my favourite bike shots of the last 6 months:

I take shots, just for fun, and being a bit of a drawer/sketcher, and can see "art" in things other can't, I'm not sure if I agree with the altering-photos-after-the-event thing.

I feel that its the "moment" that captures the spirit/flavour, and like to see spontanious stuff.
( Eg, Andy Warholes Marilyn Monroe/Soup shots. Too artificial, but some people like em.)

But...There is a definite improvement in altered shots, with the finished product giving an impression of it being taken at "that" moment.

An example of the moment shots for me, was riding in Waterton National Park, Canada.
I was taking shots of the sunrise and bumped into a guy from National Geographic doing a Time Lapse sequence for TV. ( He didn't get it as it was too windy.)
But as we talked a Bald Eagle flew overhead. I took the shot, and on the slide you can just make it out. I probably could enhance it, but feel the moment would be tainted...

Those pics are stunning! have you edited them much/used a poloriser?

I'm looking at selling my Sony A200 DSLR as its just too big to carry around.

I was about to buy the Panasonic ZS3 tonight for £199, gets cracking reviews - how does it compare to your G9 (not sure what to look for )

Some great shots on here.. haven't used my DSLR (Canon EOS 350D) for ages because I lacked the time to practise with it and got fed up with lugging around.

Taking a slightly different tack to get my enthusiasm back - my Lumix GF1 (micro four-thirds) arrived today and I'm feeling suitably enthused to get out there and get snapping! Just the 'pancake' 20mm lens for the time being, but I think that will encourage me to just snap away and enjoy it!
