At the end of the day, a mars bar is full of fat.....hydrogenated fat. Sugar + fat = sh!te.

Freehub, tell your coach he can keep his mars. If he really wants to give you a freebie, ask him to give you a small packet of mixed nuts and fruit, minus the chocolate.

    9 Mars Bars for 2 quid 80.

How many energy bars can I get for 2 quid 80?

I find mars bars fuel me fine on the bike compared to those small bars like cadburys brunch.

My trainer gives everyone a mars bar before they leave, and he's produced TdF riders in his time, so Mars Bars can't be 100% bad, unless he's just trying to kill everyone now.

I eat NutriGrain Elevenses bars. Oatey chocolately goodness. I did 120 miles a couple of weeks ago on 4 of them plus 4 bananas and several litres of energy drink.

Elevenses Bars are 6 to a box but cost about £2.50. Probably better for you than a Mars Bar but still VERY tasty.

    ELEVENSES:
    180 calories
    6g of fat (1.5g saturated)
    28g of carbs
    2g of protein

    MARS BAR:
    285 calories
    11g of fat (none saturated)
    44g of carbs
    3g of protein

I think that was a bloody good effort mate!

How did you find the climb out of lofthouse? Its a bit of a killer and teases you with false sumit after false sumit! I did a lot of that route the other week:

    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/28239737

My average speed was a fair bit slower and I only did half the distance that you did! (although about the same amount of climbing). Looks like you did some 'orrible main roads though. The A61 can be miserable to cycle along.

The climb out of lofthouse was fairly ok, but I have easy gears, I climbed it in 34-21 and my climbing is pretty naff at the moment, but I got up it. Then as you go up, just before the cattle grid, or rather about quarter of a mile, there is a right turn, unsuitable for motor vehicles, I plotted the route to go down that, I started going down and it only got worse, so I turned back. Bet the puncture came from down there.

Right at the bottom of the decent, on a bed with a little stream going under, I had to stop there to change the tube.

    I do love elevenses.

Looking at the nutritional info for Mars Vs Elevenses, surely the Mars Bar is the best? That 11g of fat would surely not end up sitting there it'd get burnt off? It's just under double, but also allot more carbs.

They biodegrade, but they do it slowly. A discarded black, shrivelled banana peel looks as bad as a plastic wrapper to me.

That's why I make sure I chuck mine a long way from the road.

If you are in a fragile ecosystem then adding nutrient rich material like banana skins can allow species which wouldn't normally grow to gain a foot hold.

In addition lots of litter and food waste can attract rats - which again once present can start to predate other species.

In your typical grotty urban roadside this might be par for the course - but if you cycle in areas like natural parks, uplands, this could be a problem. The hill walkers among you will be aware that it's a particular no go in places like the cairngorms or Ben Nevis

Freehub, where do yo think 11g of hydrogenated fat goes inside your body? I'll tell you....It goes into your bloodstream, through your veins and ultimately passing through your arteries, where it sticks, little by little. Anybody who fuels a 100 miler on Sh!te needs a reality check. What do you eat before the ride? You should be aiming for a large bowl of porridge and honey or fruit or a decent low fat cereal and some wholemeal toast with peanut butter. I'll coach you

Well - fat is an essential part of your diet. Daily recommended intake is 50g I believe.

Still - if you're eating several Mars Bars on a ride (in addition to you normal daily intake of fats), it can't be good for you.

But it's not nearly as bad as Fastlad makes out. It would be different if you were sat on the sofa mowing down on them.

Who do you race with, Fastlad.

What sort of rides do you do
What sort of speeds are you doing?
What cat are you? How many races have you done?

I limit to 2 mars bars on a ride, some flapjack, maybe a snickers, and maybe the odd cereal bar and a banana.

Christ almighty, the bloke does a solo hilly 100 miler but eats a couple of chocolate bars on the way and people start going on at him like he's fuelling himself with Superkings and crystal meth. Will, I'm sorry to tell you this, but you can take all the dietary advice in the world, micromanage what you eat to the nth degree, and you'll still die anyway. So keep up the big rides, have a bit of what you fancy along the way, and most of all enjoy it.

I haven't raced for years but i have done many, many time trials and recently, lots of sportives here and abroad. Don't let my username fool you (i'm really 42) I ride both road and MTB although i did start with road bikes when i was 13. I was superkeen and stupid, i rode everywhere, 50-70 milers on sundays. Never knew what a powerbar or flapjack looked like back then  When i was about your age i'd go out on century rides with my club and if the weather turned nasty, like it often did, i would stick the chain on the big ring and i was gone  60, 70, 80 miles from home sometimes. 10 stones of racing snake

Hey, enjoy your chocolate, you sound as though you have a sweeter tooth than me. All i'm saying is just try and see the bigger picture, do your research, look at labels, the different types of fat. You're posting on here looking for advice, right? Can you or anyone on here disagree with what i'm saying? Don't let money be your excuse to fuel your rides with what is basically crap!! BTW good on you for wanting to learn. I never had an internet forum when i was your age.

There is in fact zero Hydrogenated fat in a Mars bar. They have removed trans-fats some time ago. There is 6g of sat fats which is about the same as a bottle of For Goodness Shakes, but a Mars has a lot less refined sugar in it (36g in a Mars, 55g in a bottle of FGS).

When working hard during exercise, a Mars is going to get burnt off pretty easily, the fat content isn't going to provide fast energy, but it will in turn replace that which is metabolised from the body.
    Complicating matters since 1965

Woah!!! easy on the Chocs there lad. One snickers is fine but three bars of crap?? I've done more century rides than i care to remember and my food choice is usually- 3-4 bottles (usually just water) buying extra at shops etc when needed. Small sandwiches with banana (pennies to buy) A half of a sorreen loaf cut into small bite size pieces with butter and jam (sainsbury's sell them for £1) and maybe some jellybabies!! Believe me....the soreen fruity malt loaf gives incredible energy and tastes a million times better than any powerbar!! :D

Soreen is food of the gods!

I'm doin 100 solo on mon truly testing my new bike and now it looks like im testing out the food of the gods as well...

For Soreen lovers I recommend Soreen Go bars

    Per bar:

    Energy - 143 kCal
    Protein - 2.7g
    Carbohydrate - 29g (14.4g sugars)
    fat - 1.8g

Cost £1.68 for a box of 5 in Asda (though they were on offer at £1 a box recently so I stocked up). They're now my preferred cycling food and they're moist and chewy unlike most muesli bars.

I have nothing against mars bars or snickers, but I'd imagine they get a bit messy if you eat them after they've been in your pocket for a while.
    More problems but still living....

I was watching the lance armstrong video "the road to paris" and he was eating snickers, he says he always eats them on rides.
Plenty of pros eat what we could crap, when you body is totally depleted it will cannibalise itself, taking anything it can for fuel including saturated fats..

Then i do understand that Hydrogenated fat can collect in your nostrils making it hard to breathe when doing tough climbs.

A few chocolate bars on a 100 miler will do you no harm whatsoever, a few chocolate bars every day when doing no exercise is different matter.

I know they've got lots more carbs, but I notice it's only got about half the calories of a mars bar. Would that mean I need to eat more of them?

Wonder how much they are in Tesco Metro.

Yes, probably! If it ends up being too expensive then just get a soreen malt loaf (bogof in tesco at the moment) and chop it up.

You are not supposed to snort the Mars bar.
  • I snort them or use them as a suppository, on occasion i have one in each nostril and a kingsize up the rear, you should see me fly! :x

If he wants someone, he will get in contact with them, he was expecting me apparently but I faffed around about it and took a while before I went, I never expected it to be what it is.

Hmmm, did you take the blue pill, or the red one....? :)
