I have been off the bike for a couple of weeks due to a chest infection and family commitments. Will i have lost any of the fitness i have gained over the winter?

about two weeks worth, I would guess. Ride your bike and see for yourself...?
  • Just got my second bad cold/infection this year at the moment. I get about 6 a bloody year quite often needing antibiotics to clear them. Depending on severity it takes between 2 weeks and a month to drag myself back to fitness.

Really sick of the amount of lurgy I get and how hard it hits me. I went to the doctors and asked if I had a weak immune systems. His response was if I did I would probably be dead by now or have aids or cancer. Not sure if he thought I was a hypochondriac and fobbed me off but I am definitely more prone to colds/chest infections

Depending on what level you were at beforehand, 2 weeks off could take significantly more than 2 weeks training to get back to the same level.

"The more you train, the more you can train" also has a flip side, "The more you train, the quicker you lose it" :x

Anyone using WKO+ power analysis software can look at their Performance Manager chart and looking into the future see how quickly the blue (CTL) line plummets. With a CTL of around 100, 1 week off equates to ~20 CTL loss. That would take me 3-4 weeks to get back I think. Still not sure how accurate the PMC "feels" in real life but interesting to play around with none the less.

I'm taking this from my swimming days, but I was always under the impression that the longer you'd been training then the slower any decline is. So if you'd been riding/training for 5 years, 2 weeks off would see you lose less fitness than someone that had only trained for 2 years.

I had this some years ago and bought a heart rate monitor to ease the training up.
If you're pushing a little hard colds and flu come real easily.

Using the hrm to manage the riding at a good level made a big difference to my exercise regime. I also tested my resting hr every morning (straight out of bed); if it was over 55-56 (normally was 48) I didn't train as illness was on it's way.
