What's wrong with them.

Is it lack of bananas and honey?

Warmdown does crap all for me, a massage helps me though, that allows me to cycle day in day out.

If it's just after a short single ride, weak legs; if it's after multiple day ride ie. Monday long ride, Tuesday long ride, Wednesday long ride; you get the idea then I am lead to believe that it is down to lack of protein directly after your ride. I am sure if this is not the case then I will be corrected.
As an example this week, I have done Tue 45 Wed 40, Thu rest Fri 40 Sat 58 and 75 today, post ride (20 min window I eat a Tin of Tuna and a tin of Macaroni Cheese) and so far no leg aches, also lots of fluid,

I like a good massage. Especially if it leads to a happy ending.

I know I'm posting in a semi troll thread here, but I was actually thinking of starting a thread about the same thing

Did my longest ride to date yesterday (only 83 miles) but my legs are definitely feeling it today. In a few weeks time I'm doing a ride to paris that will require back to back days of higher mileage than this.

As far as I'm aware, the best ways to avoid too much post ride fatigue / aches are:

    - Get used to the miles! (Yes, yes, I know!)
    - Post ride recovery drink (e.g. Hi 5) can help
    - Stick some compression tights on after the ride
    - Make sure you hydrate fully and eat well the evening after.

Does anyone actually know what causes legs to 'ache'? Is it lactic acid? Any other tips on how to recover faster?

    Not enough being awesome.

    Correct.
  • The aches are a symtom of toxin buildup caused by exercise. One way to quicken the removal of these toxins (& thus quicken recovery) is to massage the affected muscles to stimulate circulation in the lymph system. The lymph fluid transports waste from cells in the same fashion as the blood system but relies on one-way valves & external pressure (ie muscle contraction, body movement etc) for circulation rather than an active pump (heart).
