Lee Quarry / Pennine Bridleway / Crag Quarry Linking Route

Have you ever done the route past the Summit pub? Head up the bridleway and follow your nose ending up near the Moorcock, then up the side of what used to be the Nook and keep going and going and eventually you'll end up near the overflow at the lake. Thats not a bad little 10 miler from where we are.

I had a go at this yesterday morning.

When you take the bridleway up past summit - which way are you supposed to go? I followed a path up to the reservior, but then it kinda disappeared and I ended up having to climb over two fences and hotfooting it through the horses pens at the little farm place to get back on path

Is it all ridable or is there some pushing to be done?

Sounds like you missed the track, it goes off up the hill side before you hit the reservoir.
Drops you back down behind the animal sanctuary
  • Ah - I've gone too far then!

Is it a proper path? the only one I remember seeing was more 'flattened grass' than path and it looked pretty steep - the 'pushing bike uphill' kind of steep.

Unless I missed something or went the wrong way...

If you look on the map here you'll see it's about half way up the gravel road, I'm pretty sure it used to have a marker post in the ground.
If you're fit enough it's all climbable :D
  • I'll definitely have to have another look, I've missed that path and gone straight on the path to the corner of the reservoir.

Yep, you sort of head left up over what looks like a steep unrideable dirt/ rock path and keep heading onwards following the trail. You should see the odd bike track in it so you'll know you're in the right direction. The res will be on your right now.

You;ll get to the top of the hill with a larg boulder on your left, in front it drops fairly steep towards a fence/ gate where you will see the following:-

    pbw.jpg

Keep riding through the gates and you'll get to the farm yard. Head down the road and turn sharp left where you pick up the bridleway again and you'll end up on Blackstone Edge road, opposite where the bridleway carries on over the other side.

  • I'll have another do at that then,

I saw a couple of those signs around the farm, I hate horses anyway so I am tempted to take a twix with me next time...

I ended up in the horses enclosure I think, I carried my bike over a couple of stiles and followed a path round the edge of the reservoir and over a little stream, that kind of dumped me there. had to go through a couple of gates to get back on the main bridleway.

I was trying to be discrete (and avoid a bollocking of some crazed shotgun wielding farmer type). But they have peacocks and they started making a right racket! I didn't stick around long.

wonder if all the mud between the gates has dried up with all the good weather we've been having, last time I went that way in was nearly 6 inches deep.
Think I'll try and make it up that way soon.

Yes it has. The other bit, heading off the gravel road along the bottom of Blackstone has been resurfaced. Now I'm not one for sanitising trails but that peat bog was a killer in the winter.

Just been up to cragg quarry and to be fair it's really good, flows well and although only a 20min loop it's got enough quality to make you want to do it more than once. Just need the link from cragg to lee sorting and then it will be awesome, really good having something like this on my doorstep (ramsbottom). Here's to the trail builders
  • In the next couple of weeks I'm gonna try and ride over there.

I've got some time off work booked, so fingers crossed for the weather!

fingers definitely crossed for the weather, it would be an aweful ride in poor weather as it's literally got no shelter at all!

I know, I was going up there today but it's drizzeling. I live at the same height on the opposite side of the valley. May just spend the day in the garage and fettle my forks instead.

I presume it is near Top of Leach?

    Anyone got a map?

Might head there from Watergrove Res or park near Lee Quarry and go from there if that is poss?

Coming from Whitworth, follow Rooley Moor road all the way up. When you're above cowpe, the road forks round to the left and down to the right, follow the road round to the left and after a very short steep uphill, you'll see the new trails on your right hand side. No signage yet though but it's not difficult to follow. I'm in Whitworth so can show you where it is

Map below. Blue route is the bridleway, shorter but a killer climb, the red is easier but takes in a bit of footpath and is longer. Both start at the Buck Inn, Cowpe.

I've ridden up rooley moor road more times than I care to remember. If there is even the slightest breeze I'm staying low.

I know this is probs not the thread to ask in, but thre's more chance of people who know Lee Quarry who ook at this thread.
What would like to know is, would a full face helmet be overkill for Lee Quarry?
I've been before but felt a bit vunerable in my XC lid.
What do you think, full face of brave the XC lid?

Suppose it's down to personal preference. If you feel more confident with a full face then go for it, to be honest I wouldn't want to come off and smash my head of some of the larger rocks. Oh and I use a normal open face giro :)

I don't want to look like a big nelly if a full facer is overkill, but you are right about those big rocks, they scare me, and the trail with the big drop on the left hand side, I nearly got off and walked on that bit

As one of the people most likley to end up calling the ambulance and then filling out accident report forms etc I would be more than happy to see you in a full face helmet, quite afew others wear them. Also see quite a few people up there with no helmets though (which really anoys me but each to their own). I just got some kneepads after a couple of falls in the quarry, never considered I needed them before but those rocks can do a lot of damage.

A full facer will be a lot less out of place at Lee Quarry compared to most other venues so wear it if you feel happier.

Is anyone going up to cragg today for the guided tour with Ed Oxley. They are meeting at the Buck in Cowpe at 10am and riding to Cragg as a group then back to the Buck for beers!
  • I suspect strongly that this is you, Gavin!

Tony here. Looks like we need to get across to LQ via cragg - you got any spare time over this bank holiday weekend?

    Hey Tony.

Sure. I was gonna have a short, quick ride out later to see how the ankle is holding up (its gone a funny shade of purple).

If it feels ok then sure!

I was up at Cragg today with Tony, Ed & Graham. Excellent trails. You can ride them slow or really fast, some fantastic berms drops and short climbs. About as technical as you can get without riding over rocks (except there were a few of those too).

Let me know how you get on. Bearing in mind a trip up rooley moor road would be involved!

Went to Cragg quarry today. is was well worth the pedal up Max & Paddys road to nowere(Rooley moor rd) should be good when finished with markers etc. I only went round once as i could have been on the Moon not another living soul, got the feeling if i fell off i might not be discoversd for weeks.Something will need to be done to deny access to moterbikes though or else the trails will soon be ripped up.
