A mate is looking for a decent XC full suss for around the £1000 to £1200 mark. I decided to have a good look around all the forum for sale sections I could think of and all the auction sites for a decent 2nd hand bike or frame.

The prices some people are asking!!!! what are they smoking

A 2005 Specialized Epic offers above £2,000

A 2006 Trek 90 already bid up to £1100

A GT I-Drive 5 with lots of upgrades £1499 ? it didnt cost that new

Either 2nd hand bikes are suddenly the new chic or there is a lot of people suddenly trying to buy a bike now the weather is warming up. I always thought 2nd hand bikes had a big depreciation it looks like they are appreciating in price at the moment. I reckon my mate is better off buying brand new full price he will get a better deal. :?

Know what you mean Stubs, there's still the ocasional bargain, but you really have to look for them.

I guess in an uncertain economy more people will tend to look second hand, so that may be a factor.

Second hand parts seem to be the same though, pair of Hayes Stroker Rydes went for 80 quid t'other day, they're 90 new of Wooly Hat Shop.

Have a look at pinkbike, I got a decent second hand freeride/downhill bike for 1200. All-mountain's are obviously cheaper than that.

The used 456s are classic, it took ages for ebay to notice the big price drop so really mangled old ones were selling for more than brand new ones

OTOH I seem to be doing OK.

thing about selling second hand is that no one wants to pay what bikes are worth, they think they can offer the equivalent of funk all and get a much better bike than the money they have to spend.

theres a couple of folk who have tried to sell bike on here for example but folk offer insulting prices for them.

now, i know somehting is ony worth what someone is prepared to offer for it but there is a line at which people have to get a bit realistic.

It depends a bit on what you're after too though. Like, if you want a Meta 5, there's probably never been a better time because of all the warranty replacements! And also the older ones are less popular as a used buy because of all the bad word of mouth, even though they're not at all affected by the issues of the more recent frames.

Just fit a triple ply DH tyre to the back, and a slick to the front, that should slow him down

I wanted a cheap second-hand set of tripleclamps and some beefy brakes to rebuild my DH bike and was trawling eBay. There were Codes and Formula's going for 75% of RRP or about what you could find them for on special offer somewhere and '08 888's (my 8" fork of choice) were going for big money - £400 for a tatty looking sets of RC3's

In the end I got a set of '08 World Cups for £380 - New and some new Tech V2's with Aztec SS Rotors for £300 - I'd have saved virtualy no money going second-hand.

Bikes is just as bad, you can save a couple of quid. But you can't really see from a pic if it needs a new drive train, you get no warranty (I've claimed 2x BB's, a set of Fox 36's and a complete DHX rebuild on warranty in recent years) plus obviously a bit of the old interest free credit is out of the window.

My Sanction is still on the classifieds, I have priced it VERY reasonably but got some totally webbo offers in... I replied to one guy asking if he was pi55ed when he put the offer in!!!
  • People do try it on a bit when buying/selling stuff. I always try to price my stuff at a price where I'd be happy to buy it and feel I got a good deal. After all, it's stuff that's been replaced so it's only going to be sat in the garage doing nothing if it dosent sell.
When buying, again, I'll offer what I genuinely believe is SLIGHTLY less than a fair value for something, that way, I could potentialy bag a bargain, but the seller can see I'm genuinely interested. (Cheese, I'll give you £20 for the Sanction  ).

Mind you, I did see an absolutely MINT Cove Hustler with a load of pretty much brand new top end kit that went for £1,500 on ebay a week or so ago (some of you saw the link I posted because I couldnt believe it).

Oh, and FFS, NO, I DONT WANT YOUR FKN X-BOX OR YOUR R/C FKN CAR! AND NO! I'M NOT HOLDING IT FOR 3 MONTHS UNTIL YOUR FKN BIRTHDAY!

The Big Cheese Your asking a very reasonable price for your GT but from what I have seen over the last few days you should at least be asking for 10% over the retail price.

People seem to think I paid £1500 and I have put £500 of goodies on it so it is worth £2000. No as soon as you wheel the bike out of the shop you have lost about 30% of the price and putting expensive goodies on is like building a big extension on your house it doesnt raise the value by anything like the amount you paid polskibuilderski.

As for stupid offers why not make a stupid offer you never know the vendor might be stupid.

Well, I'm not stupid so that's why the webbo got told in so many words to do one ;)

There are certain rules when selling 2nd hand goods of course, and also rules when it comes to pricing. What I cannot stand is people like vultures trying to whittle down folk as they know (or they *think*) that the person is so desparate they will give in. Again, people have been told this.

I have sold so much stuff over the years, and as such I have got to know the 2nd hand market quite well.

While it's true that cars lose that much money (which in itself is ridiculous) other items dont, and of course the pricing varies due to certain factors:

    Age
    Condition
    Mileage
Extras (or money spent on making something more desireable)

It's not a house eaither and the same rules of course do not apply.

I put a price up for what the item is worth, nothing more, nothing less. A serious buyer who know's their stuff will see that and not question it, and as CWNT mentioned above, I price the item to the amount I would be prepared to pay.

Oh and you have to love the folk who go "I saw one go on ebay the other day for XYZ" which is totally inasmissable as its an auction site so that doesnt automatically set the value for goods, as I see things on ebay that I wanted and would have paid more for than the final bid.

(although this thread is not about me and I don't want to make it so) the price I am asking is spot on for all the reasons listed above, and I know what things are worth and have got to know the market, so if someone thinks they can get it cheaper, then please be my guest and come back to me when you have the same item, in the same condition etc etc

I think I would be waiting a while for that to happen

It's only worth what someone is willing to pay.

Thanks to CWNT, it's worth £20

Bad example to use, extensions on houses do raise the value more than it cost, thats why there are so many property developers.

Not true one of my exs is an estate agent according to her you will get approx 50% of what you spent on an extension back on the sale price. She particulary loves people who set themselves up as property developers I think she calls them prey.

Oh so all extensions = 50% loss?

She should go back to estate agent school in that case, infact I can raise you a top trump in that my sister in law is a manager of an estate agents and well she'd tell you the opposite.

Like I said "generally" it increases in value, it depends on what you do to the property but property developers arnt stupid they dont do it to make a loss.
