I don't mind the perennial misspelling on here, but sometimes peoples' posts become unreadable as a result.

I have a theory that words never flow off the page (or screen) for these people, so they don't understand how jarring it is for the rest of us to read 'break' for 'brake' and 'great' for 'grate' and so on.

IMO if you are posting on a public board then by definition you want to be understood, so you should make an effort to make your posts as clear as you can.

  • While I'm generally pretty good at spelling and typing, I run a dictionary add-on in my browser which gives me the red wiggly worm under most mistakes. I do this partly out of self-respect - I consider myself to be literate and don't want to come across as lackadaisical about my English. But it's also out of respect for other people, who generally find it easier to read English than almost-English.

It's pretty easy just to read through what you've written before you hit "submit"...

sorry guys but its not that easy when youre dyslecsic , but i do find when people winge about spelling and grammer announcing you are dyslexic does disarm them

then again dyslexia was invented/dicovered by a really sick person - imagine finding the disorder and then giving it a name none of the sufferers could spell!!:lol::lol:

Curious, I'm not dyslexic but I use a spell checker in my browser, you are but clearly don't use a spell checker. My spell checker has just underlined 5 words in the quote above.

Not using one - they're free - is a bit like being hard of hearing and not using a hearing aid. I'd suggest that where there are freely available devices to help, you should use them.

Maybe... I know plenty of dyslexic people who can still manage to use a spell check.

And I know it's not a spelling mistake, but for me the misuse of 'ignorant' is probably the thing that grates the most.

softlad, sadly there's a difference between search and replace and artificial intelligence!

fair enough - worth asking though.. ;)

you're assuming people know how to spell...

since posting this thread, someone, or something, has changed the 'word' - 'definately' in the title to the correct spelling?? Has this been put through the new filter?

[EDIT] ah....i think I've just answered my own question!

I'm not sure I fully understand your point about ''important stuff.'' Don't you think the people you write to on a forum like this are important enough to deserve clear writing?

And the crucial part of the wordjumble effect is that readers can only reassemble words because they know how the word is spelled in the first place and it's precisely because spelling is relatively consistent that they are able to skip reading every letter. The correct spelling is like the picture on the jigsaw puzzle box - that's what helps the reader to put the letters back in the right place. If the letters were consistently jumbled up, readers would no longer have the template.

Phew, I've just spent 2.5 pages worrying about my spelling ability - I couldn't see anything wrong with 'definitely'! :D

    I'm with Westerberg

    It's all about clear communication.

I tend to re-read my posts before I hit "Submit" and often find that I've screwed up. Even when I do post I'm fairly sure I don't get it all correct.

As someone implied earlier in the thread, typos are forgiveable, it's the consistent misspelling of particular words that really tends to grate.

Grammar and Calendar are a couple more to add to the list.

Call me a Nazi if you'd like, just spell it correctly please
    "Impressive break"

    "Thanks...

Punctuation is important too. Since when did new sentences start with small letters?

:D to all the above re: grammar and spelling. What pi55es me off is when certain words/phrases are shortened eg. St.Patricks to St.Pattys. To our American cousins reading this - St.Patty is a female name, St.Paddy is the correct abbreviation. Thanks.

By the way... why is 'phonetics' not spelled 'fonetics'??

My feeling has always been that dyslexia is a made up disorder. And that it was specifically invented so that people who can't spell don't feel so bad about themselves. It's not rocket science to learn which order I and E go round in certain words for gods sake... (for example)

Learn the rules, there are very few exceptions.

I fully expect to be slated for this opinion, tough.

This is a cycling forum not a English exam! I get racked off with folk moaning about posters spellings, & this is not the first time someone has moaned about spellings. Why do you feel the need too?
I’ve had comments made about my spelling before and I don’t like it. I have other life skills that won’t come across when posting a reply. I don’t want to, or need to be told thank you. There really are more important things to worry about. I bet many of the spelling Gestapo have floors in their make-up, but in this format it's not going to be picked up on is it?
Lets accept the fact that most read a post, and reply to it.
If someone was submitting their CV, then I would completely understand your frustrations. But on a forum? Urmm. Every now and then someone is going to spell something wrong. Hit the wrong key by mistake, post a comment really late at night when they are tired, or are under the influence (a little bit) etc, etc.
Are we all suppose to spell check everything or get it proof read, before submitting a reply? Are we all expected to have an A level in English language? I think not. I could go on, but I think you get MY point.
Finally I accept that English is important and that we should all make an effort to spell words properly. But let’s do it in the right environment. As nit picking on a forum is not the place in my opinion.

That was actually very well written. Except for the mistakes. (Puts flame suit on) 8)

I'm dylsexic too Lukasran. It doesn't stop me putting in the effort to make sure things are spelt right.

If you know you have a weakness then that's where you need to focus your effort on, in order to mitigate it.

I agree posters should do their best to check spelling. Correct use of the english language can be slightly more problematic for some. As long as the post is readable i really don't see the harm. Hopefully any new members building up the courage to post won't be put off, for fear of being savaged by the spelling and grammar bullies. :)
