Reccommend some bibshorts?

  • Okay, haven't ordered the Giordana Tenax bibs yet... Found a couple of reviews which state the chamois may not be as good as one wants. A few of the reviews have stated that the chamois fabric starts piling after the first couple of rides. Anyone experience this?

Nope, I have found mine to be very comfy for long rides and have been using them for over a year. As I said earlier I will be looking to buy some new ones in different colours shirtly :D

I think I am on eof the few people that do not get on with Giordana Tenax. I find the pad a little short at the back and my sit bones sort of slide off the back of it. Quality seems OK but Its Castelli Dome Due's for me as my favorite bib (and yes I have a pair of Assos)

Not at all - have found them brilliantly comfortable on the longest of rides and very hardwearing.

Hmm... if your sitbones slide off, I may need to reconsider. I've got wide enough sitbones that I had to hunt down a 155mm saddle to be comfortable.

Sugoi RS bibs are great. Bought after a recommendation.

I have Assos Uno's as well.

The Sugoi's feel a little more fitted in S size than the Assos. The formula chamois on the Sugoi's sounds perfect for your sit bones.

As others have said, Assos is an awesome product and had no problem wearing them for 8+ hour ride with chamois cream. Have only done a few 2 hour rides on the Sugoi bibs.

Well of course they have reviewed Assos in the past and they have always come up towards the top, and rightly so. I think personally there are a few more players now than there were i guess .... i think it comes down to the quality and fit of the insert in each case.

I've got some Giordana Tenax. They are not wearing brilliantly well after just over a years use. The underside is going shiney and showing signs of wear. They are ok ish comfort wise but there must be better out there. Will try something else next time.

Not the usual shout out for Assos. Are they losing their appeal? People sick of the exhorbitant price?

Well - they are expensive. But not a whole lot more expensive than the Giordana ones.

And they ARE damn good. Show me a pair of bibs that are as comfy and last as long as Assos for less money....

Giordana Body Clone's and Santini Genesis are both fantastic for less dosh than Assos if you shop about. I use these and Assos Mille's, but for training I use Polaris bibs they were cheap but I find the pad and fit superb!

No I don't think people are sick of their 'exhorbitant' price, you get what you pay for and with Assos, it's money well spent, cos you're getting the quality, fit and the durablility.

Assos are the best, and they are worth the significant cost. I have a pair of Uno S5s and have recently acquired a pair of S5 Milles and they are streets ahead of anything else I've tried. I wore the Milles on a 90 mile 3000m ride in the North Pennines yesterday and the comfort was exceptional. I will be saving those for long rides and sportives and using the Unos for general use.
I've ordered a pair of the Shutt standard shorts in the hope that they might provide a budget option for short training rides. I'll let you know how I get on with them.

I;ve always bought Assos after trying loads of other makes in the past. The shutt standard shorts are really rather good for 30 quid. Bargain of the year in some respects ... But I am intrigued about the Castelli body paint bibs and that insert, must admit .....

not got any assos. But the top of the range DHB bibs i've got have a better pad than my castelli tights (kiss pad). Next set of bibs will prob be assos or the body paint or maybe the new top of the range crafts.

I think that Kiss pad from Castelli isn't that great. If you want good bibs, then buy Assos!

Underwhelmed by the Uno S5's (relatively speaking).
Good, but my Santini gel intech pad felt more comfy...

I have a pair of Castelli Velocissimo bibshorts with the kiss pad and agree they aren't all that great. Wish somebody would buy and review the Body Paint bibs though!
  • Okay, so the big consensus seems to be that Assos is worth it. Is that an across the brand thing? or are the lower end bibs not gonna hold up?

They don't really have 'lower end' shorts. The Unos are a top level short. I've used them for the last three years or so and have loved them. I ride half a dozen or so hilly sportives and probably rack up around 6000 miles a year in all weathers. I got some new Mille S5s on ebay this year, and have worn them a few times. They are definitely better than the Unos but not by a huge margin. The padding is thicker and they are more supportive. I managed to get them new with tags for less than the retail cost of Unos, otherwise I would probably have struggled to justify paying the extra premium. Having said that, they were very comfortable on an epic ride on Saturday, and I may well end up deciding that that extra comfort is something I don't want to do without. That's the trouble with Assos. Once you've tried them there's no going back. This may well apply to their more expensive shorts as well!

Assos are too short, the die comes out (mine have gone off black and the seams are grey) and the pad goes brown when worn in the rain. And that's not because I've cacked myself. Pearl Izumi PRO are very good.

Have to add that for *value* I think the Giordana Tenax ones are excellent. I've got afew pairs, and they are great.

Also lucked out on the recent closeout special at CRC on the Santini Genesis, which are just fabulous for shorter rides. Not worn them yet for more than a couple of hours, but up to that they are superbly comfortable.

I'm not on about the Kiss pad, it's the newer Progetto X2 insert i'm interersted in, looks good:

A very odd C+ I thought this month. No Assos in the shorts test and no Giro Atmos/Ionos/New one in the helmet test.

The mag is actually quite rubbish for tests. They look flash but rarely inform me in any way when it comes to buying.
Besides, who decides what is best? We can't agree so why let them agree for you.

Glad I provoked a response about Assos - kind of reassuring that people still rate them despite the cost.

My Giordanas are have deteriorated quite badly within the last few weeks. Worn material and uncomfortable pad so I'm in the market for a replacement. They were about £55 and have lasted a little over a year, which is pretty rubbish in my view. How long would you expect Assos to last for? I absolutely take the point about the Assos quality and if I'm going to have to spend £50 every year that might be a false economy. On the other hand if "normal" shorts are only going to last a year I may as well buy a budget option and bin 'em when their shot.

A year might well be a short life, dependent on how many miles you do in them, and your, ahem, shape.

My most used Giordana Tenax have done maybe 2000 km, and they look basically new still.

    Just got my Gore Xenons.

Seem very good indeed compared to my Unos.

One thing though, C+ said they are a "mere" 4 panels. I counted a hell of a lot more and a hell of a lot more than the Unos. What's that all about?
