Hi guys,

I was wondering if you guys could help me out, I mostly just run and would like to start up triathlon.

I wanted to know what training aids do you guys use? What helps you get the most out of training? For example I use a Garmin for my running and find lots of the data useful.

Is there something that you think really helps your training? Do you track your bodyfat etc?

Just looking to see how much info people like to get on their training to improve.

Be good to read what you use.

Garmin 705 + HR. Maybe a powermeter when I'm a bit more committed.

The number one training aid = a coach.
  • powermeter
Forgive my ignorance on this, how does this work then?

Would you say joining a cycling club would help with coaching advice? I know I get a lot from the running club.

In general runners are more knowledgeable when it comes to training than cyclists are. Depending on the club it is unlikely that you will get a great deal of useful training advice. In general cyclists have traditionally trained at lower intensities and longer durations than runners, this is not always the correct way to train but just like wives' tales old habits are hard to change.

It is a fantasitc training device assuming the athlete is capable of using it properly.

What they do is measure the power being produced by the rider and so there is no hiding from how well or how badly you are doing. As they are a relatively new technology, quite expensive and not for the "technically inept" many are opposed to their use... but I think they are just jealous of others gaining an edge that they don't have.

You can still be a very good cyclist without a power meter so they are not a necessity but well worth it if planning to get serious.
