Hi
Problem with sore knees, started last year mid season cycle fairly hard 3 days on the trot developed very sore knees rested a while then returned ok....Bought a turbo trainer used it 3 times very common sense approach trained one day on one day off at an easy cadence to get used to it after two weeks sore knees returned now even after resting can't seem to loose them trying to ride through now we have nice weather ice knees after every ride. Any ideas?

Where in the knee are you experiencing soreness?

I'm watching this thread keenly as my knees have started to get sore after long rides, just above the kneecap at the front of the knee.

sounds like same as mine, mine is a soft tissue injury basically a muscle strain round the knee i get pain just above the knee cap on the inside, caused by overuse/doing to much .
this pain happened a few times after long rides and i ignored it.
try resting it for a few weeks then take it easy ,i didnt and had a 4 month lay off
just getting started again now after doctors ,painkillers, anti inflamatorys, rest ,ice ,physio,
ownly allowed to ride max 20 miles with no big hills back to pysio in 4weeks time ,it can take up to 12 months to heal properly

Sounds similar to me aswell, above inside of knee at end of quad muscle. Physio says i need to strengthen my glute muscle to help tracking of my knee. When i squat my right knee's plumb line is inside my big toe. Had same problem last year and must admit that acupuncture cured in straightaway. Doing exercises trying to prevent it but will go under the needle again if it persists.

I'd look at bike setup too. I'm getting an issue with knee pain behind the knee cap, looks like it was saddle too low despite having a bike fit 2 months ago where my seat got raised a fair amount. Went from 74 to 77, and now to 79 this weekend. I'm hoping to have now resolved the issue!

Thanks, this all sounds familiar to my symptoms.

Have had some physio, including acupuncture which showed clearly there was quite a lot of tension in that area. This gave me a week's relief but the soreness seems to have come back.

Suspect bike fit may be an issue as the knees get more sore riding in the saddle than sprinting out the saddle so will look at getting a bike fit soon too.

I'm having trouble with mine, i used to go everwhere at a low cadence in a high gear but I've been trying to spin, starting on the excercise bike down the gym but now whilst out on a ride too and my knees are aching. I thought it was pushing a big gear that did them in normally. I try to average 90 to 100rpm on the excercise bike but I do push it up to about 130 for the last minute or too, are my Knees not used to it and complaining?
    It's a bit worrying :(

+1 for me last year just as I started to increase intensity and duration of training. Physio also gave me range of stretches (legs) to do 3 times a day. This has worked for me (touch wood). I still do the strectches but only after each ride or occasionally if my legs feel tight.

Thanks for all your replies to this topic. It would appear that I have over done it and done some pretty much lasting damage. It even makes my knees sore now doing pretty easy squats, mind you at 50 years of age nothing mends as quick as it once did I have acute tennis elbow too after years of guitar playing. Hay ho maybe time to settle down with a good book and leave the sporty stuff to other ha ha

Give your knees some rest and relaxation for now.

Nah. I don't think it's necessary for you to give up biking so quickly, just that next time you have to take more care in picking the pace. You'll find your rhythm in this eventually. So don't give up just yet.

But if the damage is just too much, then maybe you should.
