Can't quite decide on this this one... Cav is he really off form/still warming up, or is he playing the ultimate bluff?

Remember last year - I can win it one day but not this time....

you can rename the thread by editing the first post you made

alternatively AFX could hijack the thread i guess

the rule of thumb up until now is AFX (or deignated poster) starts all threads marked PTP

I don't mind who starts the threads, but a) it's a bit early and b) calv is right :)

Cavendish will most definitely not win.

Especially now the finish is closer to the poggio (it is, isn't it?).
  • Am I misunderstanding the PTP threads. I've avoided posting in them as I'm not really interested in taking part, but I'd quite like to join in a discussion on MSR and other races. Don't want to upset anyone!

And I don't reckon Cavendish will win, think he'll come good later in the year. Think it's about time someone won from an attack on the Poggio, the finish being closer will certainly help.

Was having this conversation about a huge bluff with a work colleauge the other day, but my money is also on Boonen at the moment.

There's not much discussion in the PTP threads, so they're probably boring to anyone who doesn't take part.

As for MSR, I hope someone tries to stir it up a bit on the Poggio. I mean, no offence to Cavendish or his fans, but last year's race... up until Haussler started sprinting... was pretty dull.

Hopefully someone will stir it up on the Cipressa!

Anyone know how long before the race they close the roads?
Will be over there, so would love to see Cav win again, but not looking likely.

I think my PTP pick will be Pozzato?

So many of you mention Cavendish bluffing, but I can't imagine anyone delibaretely trying not to win races. The winner of Dauphine Libere has always been regarded as the one most likely to win the Tour, so why wouldn't riders be bluffing then?

I think Cav bluffed last year either in Eroica or Tirreno-Adriatico. He got dropped deliberately on a steep hill.

No harm in going in as the underdog - maybe then the other sprinters' teams will do a bit of work for once.
  • Gasparotto was talking about mixing it up from le Manie, which is what they did when Cancellara won.

In this month's procycling ( I know a while ago, but still relevant):

    Cavendish:
Aimed at having 2,000km under his belt by the end of Feb, but managed 'about 300km'.

Most roadies on this forum managed more than that.

You can't miss out that much riding in January & February and be in top form for Milan - San Remo - no way.

Wouldn't surprise me if Boonen got wind of that quite early and decided quietly to come to Milan in better shape than he normally does.

    Eitherway, he's certainly not sandbagging.

2000ks I would have thought that would be the minimum you would be aiming for if San Remo was a target?

I think he means 2000 km of actual racing - that's about what he did before the end of February last year.

I quite enjoyed watching Scarponi (I think it was) and Garzelli stringing the field out on the Cipressa, but unfortunately no-one took the bait and launched a commited attack. I think nowadays they all know the course profile is too tame for for the pace of the sprinters being shielded in the peloton and so I'm watching it more for the lovely springtime scenery until the run up to the final hill.

iit was in their training camp in Majorca he planned 2000k but actually managed about 300k, i think cancellara could be in with a shout again, but think Haussler and Hushovd will be going well too

Would love Cav to win it again this year, but I agree- he hasn't got the form right now, and he's not bluffing.

With Haussler unlikely to be fit enough to turn up, my money's on Boonen.

Yeah I will be going for Boonen in the PTP providing nothing happens in the meantime, definitely the favourite IMO.

A trio of Italians at very good prices there, including two former winners.

How can you have Greipel as favourite, he's got no form in this type of event whatsoever.

Suspect that the (suspect) thinking behind this is that Columbia will sprinkle some of their fairy magic winning dust on him.

Leaving the rest on Cav's toothbrush.

Does seem quite an odd favourite, maybe this shows there isn't really a favourite, hopefully we'll get quite an open race?

Also thought Bennati looked good in today's TR stage, be interesting to see who wins tomorrow's stage or even who does and doesn't go for it!

Provisional start list published this morning, Astana have got a very capable squad, 6 good dommies and 2 puncheurs who can sprint. Allan Davis has come second before now

It could be a quirk, that the bookmaker wants to create discussion or that a punter or two has taken a big position and driven the position to such low odds. Certainly Greipel seems slower at the moment and if you'd consider him for a sprint finish then you'd also want to consider others too.
