just curious as to how many members there are from these areas as I see alot of riders out there on leisurely rides and commutes and if you belong to clubs then what ones?
I am interested in joining a club if i find the right one and it makes me wonder why Chepstow doesnt have one

I'm up the road (Shirenewton) and I often see roadies in groups cycle past my house. I have quashed the urge thus far to stop a chain gang and demand who they are and where they're starting from / heading to.
A good place to meet roadies is the cafe at Millbrook garden centre near Monmouth. On a summer weekend the place is rammed with cyclists; the last lot I got chatting to were from Abergavenny road club. There is a Monmouth road club but the guy at Bridge cycles has put me off finding out more, he suggests they're a pretty hardcore bunch (90 mile Sunday rides being the norm.)
Sarah from 559 bikes goes riding on alternate Tuesdays, off road I think around Chepstow Park Wood and the like. Never been along myself. And there are clubs in the Forest and in Usk too and no doubt North Bristol....
There are other local posters btw - they'll speak for themselves no doubt. I'm up for some group road rides myself but with Mrs_Si being 37 weeks pregnant it'll be midsummer before I get to pootle out.0 -
I'm an amateur cyclist from Chepstow, regularly going for rides around south wales, and over to bristol (in the warmer months at least) although always on my own!
Would be nice to meet fellow enthusiasts from Chepstow and maybe start a small group or club.
Although I worry about my suitability to ride with others when I ride a MTB albeit with slick tyres...
Anyways hello to you all :-)0 -
reason for this post was to gauge interest in this area, i was interested to see who was around and what their situation was although it doesnt seem to have been too popular.
i am from caldicot though i work in chepstow
i looked into the possibility of starting a club in this area but i dont think i could dedicate enough time and money to the cause.
i'm looking at some of the cardiff clubs but they are pretty far away so i keep my options openCrafted in Italy apparantly0 -
Where do you usually go for rides mate? What set up have you got?
The response is pretty disappointing I agree...
I admit I don't really know the effort and extent it takes to set up a club.0 -
normal route i do is up to undy then get off the main road and take the flats up to Nash/Goldcliff which works out at 25 miles round trip from my house
however i always like to mix it up a little
here's what I did yesterday http://connect.garmin.com/activity/26840557
longer rides see me either going over the bridge to severn beach or over wentwood to Usk
i dont really know much about starting a club eithermy guess is theres more to it than arranging group rides and designing a club jersey :P , it just seemed odd to me that we didnt have one already considering the number of cyclists I see and with the bike shop in chepstow although they do off roading stuff by the look of it so maybe thats whyCrafted in Italy apparantly0 -
Yeah i fear it may be that Chepstow is a popular through town for cyclists as opposed to having a core cycling element, i may be wrong however...
Last year i predominantly stuck to the NCR routes, numbers 4 and 42 in S.Wales, and 4 and 41 over Bristol way. Hoping to discover my own routes this year as my confidence grows.0 -
I'm not far away in Caerleon. I lived in Chepstow for a few years. I ride with Abergavenny RC and we regularly go over Chepstow way and up the Wye Valley. Abergavenny isn't too far away if you are looking for a club - closer than Cardiff. We have a lot of members from Brecon area who join us en route when club runs go that way so Chepstow riders could easily do the same when we go Chepstow / Monmouth way.0
-
Pross do you ride from caerleon to meet other club riders or drive somewhere?
the biggest issue I've realised is riding to club meeting points and then completing a club ride followed by riding home can churn in some big mileage not that i'm afraid of that but not really looking to over do it. I could drive but then in my head it kinda defies the pointCrafted in Italy apparantly0 -
I normally drive to Abergavenny for my club run (for the reasons you state). I'm happy to drive as there's such a good choice of routes from Abergavenny. There is sometimes a small, slower group that meets in Usk (mainly a guy who is coaching some of the club's ladies) so that isn't too bad as a shorter ride there and back and the main ride is a bit gentler. The main club run with my trip there and back would be over the 100 mile mark every week and more like 120 most weeks  As I say they do try to plan routes to give those not from the area a chance to meet en route and the Wye Valley / Devauden / Monmouth area is a fairly common clubrun route.0

I ride through chepstow resonably regular, either on my tod or with my club. Start a bit far from Chepstow mind you I think
Rode through it on sunday when coming back from Cardiff to Ross on wye (that wasnt a club run mind you, I was out in cardiff the night before)
Can understand why you see a lot of cyclists as it even though its a main rode its a good through fare0 -
I live in Undy and just starting out on road bikes, changed from the dark side...
There does seem to be a fair few cyclists that pass through undy, caldicot and chepstow.
When I get my fitness up a fair bit I would be interested in joining somebody for a ride.0 -
I'm in Newport.
Doing the Dartmoor Classic in June so need to get some serious rides in to prepare.
Nice choice of routes from where I am. Can go up towards the valleys, Abergavenny, Cardiff or out towards Chepstow. Last long ride (53miles) for me was out to Thornbury across the old Severn Bridge. I've been looking at a route to Bath for my next long run.
Might see some of you out and about!0 -
undoubtedly will, I've probably passed and waved to some of you already
people are starting to pop up now, it does seem a shame there is no club here
well I'm the fella with the white ionos helmet riding a Giant or Ribble if you do see me out, I always wave back. besides mothers day I've been out every day since last friday as I've had the week off work. Clocked up some nice riding time out on the road, most mileage I've done off the turbo since summer.
gonna do a 30odd today and then a 40-50 to Cardiff along the flats on the weekendCrafted in Italy apparantly0 -
Hi, I live in Chepstow, and like some of you I have watched large gangs of what look like lycra-clad supermen fly past me at regular intervals. I'd love to ride with other people, but wouldn't know where to start looking. I generally pootle along at 13 - 13.5mph average, although I do tend to head for the hills quite a bit. I'd be especially in riding at the weekends if anyone can make it. This is my last ride, on Wednesday:

garmin link doesnt work for me mate
having a rest day today switching between rugby and M-SR
Perhaps we should look at a group ride one day if many are interested? try a short distance one and then if that works out a long one.
is anyone racing soon? or doing the Dragon ride?Crafted in Italy apparantly0 -
I'd certainly be up for getting involved in a group ride.0

same here!0

Sounds good to me. On my PC, Garmin Connect doesn't work on Internet Explorer, but only on Firefox.
I was hoping to do a longish ride tomorrow (Sunday) - Chepstow, Caldicot, Caerwent, Shirenewton, Llangwm, Wolvesnewton, Llanishen, Llandogo, Redbrook, Coleford, St. Briavels, Chepstow.
Anyone interested?0 -
how'd that ride work out Owen?
I rode solo to Maindy track in Cardiff, it was a great day to be out on the bike to be fair but I didnt fancy tackling any climbing today. My round trip worked out at 60milesCrafted in Italy apparantly0 -
Yes it was lovely to be out today :-)
I went on my tod from Chepstow over the Seven Bridge, heading towards Avonmouth before going back across to Olveston and then back over the bridge. Just over 17 miles, which was more than enough as it was only my third ride since the Winter lol.
We'll have to plan a group ride, like how Owen suggested but maybe a bit more notice :-)0 -
Yeah, I really enjoyed it and it went perfectly according to plan until I got to Llandogo at which point I asked myself the inevitable question of "more climbing or home via pub beer garden". Needless to say the pub won, so it was about 38.5 miles in a little under 3 hours. Great day though.0

Had to drive from Newport to Thornbury today, loads of bikes on the Aust-Thornbury road around 11:45am, looked like a club run. Wished I was out on the bike rather than in the car.
Any of you guys out there today?0 -
I was, but not with those guys!0
-
me neither, i rode to newport and back with a mate, bastards closed part of the loop by nash again so worked out at an easy 33miles. looks like no inteval training for me tonight either due to rain so easy turbo sesh me thinksCrafted in Italy apparantly0

I am fairly new to riding, but a group of 3 or 4 of us head out from the barracks in sedbury about 4 or 5 times a week. we would love to join/ have some of you along. Any takers?

Who's still up for some road riding out of Chepstow then ?
Normally head out with a mate on Saturdays or Sunday morning when family commitments allow, might even already know some of you !
I've got a few things to train for next year, so would always be good to have a larger network of road training buddies if you are locally based and up for it.
all the best,
Conor0 -
doesnt look like many of the others guys been on the forums much.
i'm heading out shortly for a 25mile route along the moors/levels to nash and back. gotta make the most of the weather whilst we still have it! :twisted:Crafted in Italy apparantly0 -
How do acid, as you say doesn't look like many chepstow'ites check this forum.
There has got to be more than a few decent cyclists in the area who can't be arsed going to Usk, Ross or RFDCC. Even though they sound decent enough as clubs , I know I personally can't be bothered driving somewhere to do a training ride when we've got such quality roads on our doorstep.
Next couple of weeks look tricky due to various commitments, but think next time I plan to head out on a weekend I'll post on here if anyone fancies it they are welcome to join. Feel free to do the same if you live in the area!0 -
Hi Guys, I've been out on the road a bit on my humble 90's hybrid in the past couple of years but thinking I need to get out more often, and with a few other like minded individuals, maybe even through the autumn too (winter's probably asking a bit much!). I live near Shirenewton, Chepstow and keen to meet up for local rides. I'm not averse to a long one did a charity Holyhead to Penarth in early September - 210 miles in just over 3 days but would be perfectly happy with a 30-40 miler with some hills every couple of weeks.
I realise this thread is over a year old, but did you guys ever get organised?
Oh, and if anybody wants to contribute to the RNLI for my ride (now complete) see http://www.virginmoneygiving.com/bob-millar .
Thanks

the guy at chepstow leisure centre , his name is paul , works in the gym their , has started a club , as i understand it they have one group at the moment but he wants to start a more advanced group as well , he also works in the bike shop in town , i believe he is quite a good rider himself , thats as much as i know but i can find out more as i know some one who works with him ,
i believe they ride out on sunday mornings
by the way dont ride around the outside of police cars in chepstow town centre , they get extremely angry if you do , and spend 10 minutes bollocking you ,0
