Nap, your S2 photo... the front mech looked set too high to me if i remember rightly cos I nearly commented, could be wrong, maybe worth a glance if the shifting is poor?

It was set by the LBS...

Shifting has always been poor with it, on my old bike too although the Stronglight chain rings have improved matters...

I'll try and lower it and see how I get on.

Yeah, take a look at the book though, here you go, see the pic labelled no. 3 http://www.sram.com/_media/techdocs/RED%20Front%20Derailleur%20PRINT.pdf ...cant remember where i saw your photo but the gap to the outer chainring should fall between 1 and 3 mm, yours might be right, its just i seemed to remember it looked high

My red front mech seems no better and no worse than my ultegra ones. Maybe I just got lucky or maybe I am not 'ard enough to cause a problem!

It'll be fine i expect or all the pros would be moaning about them, id be very surprised if the shifting wasnt really good.

A lot of SRAM sponsored riders DON'T like the Ti caged Red mech, hence loads use a Force mech.

    I like that chainset....but as I bought the SL3 frameset I don't get the choice of a BB30. :(

    Are they Zipp 202's?
    Me likey.
    :D
Perhaps, if/when the Red Front mech wears out on my bike I'll consider a DA or Force as a replacement but that'll be a fair way off yet. :)

Well there is that pros bikes are underweight anyway so they'd have no problem with the few grams going on the mech, stuff like that when they'd only be adding downtube weights or whateve anyway. Ive got force myself too for both mechs but with Red shifters, all works a treat.

Im sure the Red setup well would be pretty damn good tho, I know force is. Nap'll see soon what he thinks too, lots of people have front mechs set too high, see it quite a bit.
  • I purchased a Red full gruppo for $1100ish US, that would be ca. 750 L. I had to pay full MSRP for a frame, but I could have gotten a cheap frame, ebayed it and gotten the Red for under $1600. Didn't do that, because I love the Cervo frame. I wish I had ordered Force FD, which I could have saved money on at the time (last spring before Red swept TdF, when you could get great deals as an early adopter/ risk taker), but except for that one titanium flaw, Red is nigh perfect, for me. I rode 8000 km last summer, and it never let me down. I took it out this week. No adjustments necessary.

I do have to avoid simultaneous front-ring and rear-cog shifting, which jams the chain and front ring, and takes the FD out of alignment. This is a beauty, which is to say, it requires a bit of thoughtful treatment.

Essentially, shift front ring first then rear cogs after your chain has settled in. Or the converse. If you must simultaneously shift, get a steel FD cage, of whatever brand.

I am not going to say Campy Chorus, R, SR, or Shimano DA/ Ultegra are inferior. These are all GREAT. I bought Red last year because the reviews were favorable, and the price was incredibly great. I have no regrets, at all, except if I had it to do over, I'd get a steel FD cage, whose weight difference would be minuscule.

Figure out your needs, weight included, and how much you are willing to pay. I'd love to try DiI2, too high a price for me, right now. I could do it, but I don't mind giving my fingers some exercise. Red performs admirably among mechanicals, and I suspect Force are Rival do too. As do Campy and Shimano mechanicals. You won't be unhappy with any of these.

    :)

Raced it on Saturday. Didn't use the small ring though...

But that said, having bimbled around it definitely seems like an improvement.
