Fudges are pretty good for SRAM stuff - I bought Rival and Force stuff there and it arrived pretty quick. If you are in London or Surry (I think) you can visit their shops. I met Andrew (the owner) and he was a pretty passionate "bikey" and apparently they have a good mechanic. If this sounds like a strong rec - I guess it is, I have a couple of Dahon bikes and if you look at their prices they are very competitive on those too.

    +1 for Fudges.

I bought a full Rival group from their London store in December -- great service, good guys and the best price.

Hi Carbon, I got my Red stuff from Fudges also.. great. I moved up from Ultegra SL and like you considered Dura Ace. I am very happy with my Red bits. The stuff I bought worked out the same price as Dura Ace and I am very happy with it so far. In function they are all good enough for the pros.. just different. Buy it and enjoy I say 8)
  • So - perhaps an obvious question, is the change from Ultegra to Sram Red worth the cash/change?

I've only had Shimano previously and my Trek Madone is only a couple of years old, so the kit itself is still good. But I hear good things about Sram kit and I'm a bit of a sucker for all things shiny and new :D

The deals at Fudge cycles look very good and they even do a pretty good looking deal where you can mix and match the various gruppo. Any advice warmly welcomed.
  • To be fair, I've just got Rival on a Boardman Team Carbon and before I was Shimano through and through.

Its seems the more miles I put on it, the shifting gets better and better.

The shifting is more precise and the ergonimcs are better compared to the new Ultegra.

My only grip is a lump where the shifter meets the bar, but I think that can be smoothed out with some extra bar tape or summat

    Fudges Cyckles or JE James.
I got my Shifters from JE James when they were at £280 a pair and Fudges were £300.
Got both mechs from Fudges for £165 and £55.

    100% Yes.
With Nokon cables the shifting is totally spot on. Quicker and faster than Shimano and as a shimano fan I was wary of the swap....but I'm glad I did. :)

  • It'll be interesting to see the durabiliy of SRAM stuff. I've been running their kit on the MTB for years and it's not exactly brilliant - especially Jockey wheels which are truly hopeless.

I have Ultegra/Dura Ace mix on one bike and Red on another. It's better yes but really there's nowt wrong with Ultegra, it's smooth, reliable and shifting speed is absolutely fine. In fact, the Red front mech is cack. I may be selling mine and getting a Force one...

You are probably best replacing them with sealed bearing jockey wheels. They are indeed most cack. That said, they get a much tougher time than the road ones.

Fudges are the best prices at the moment for shifters / mechs.

I'm about to buy Red shifters / mech and they've done me a cracking cash price :)

Well - I vote for YES. But it's a personal thing.

    Ultegra is good, reliable.
But if you want to and can spend the money on SRAM Red then go for it.
It's the lightest groupset, it's reliable, it mixes well with shimano.

I run SRAM Red shifters/mechs, KMC X10SL chain, DA7900 11-25 cassette on a Fulcrum RS Racing torq chainset.
    Brilliant combo.

What is wrong with the red front mech?

I can answer that (sorry Nap)...

Red front mech cage is made of titanium. And as such is a little soft and flexy. It can lead to poor front shifting. Many of the pros will use a Force front mech (which has a stiffer SS cage) and put a fake little "Sram Red" sticker on it.

Will SRAM Red shifters work with a DA 7900 rear mech? Or do you need both SRAM front & rear mechs...

    DA7900 rear mech wouldn't work.

DA7900 front mech would, and it also happens to be the lightest front mech, so the number one choice

I read weight weenies too much, and confirm that those with far too much money that have tried everything recommend the DA7900.

    Weights differ.
My SRAM Red rear mech weighed in at 147g and I think it's 167g as standard?
My front mech was 8g heavier than the advised weight on the SRAM website.

DA7900 front mech would be an interesting set up. :)
I'd like to give that a go at some point in the future.
