Tenerife fantastic

I’m just back from an annual return to Tenerife, where I can recommend great low-cost apartments with swimming pools near a well-stocked characterful bike shop and food stores.

Much of the tarmac has been recently resurfaced as smooth as glass on the island's warmer southside to provide stunning mountain rides under glorious sunshine from Los Cristianos.

Riders from the teams Astana and RadioShack were training there (week-commencing 1/3/2010).

The Easyjet flights from London Gatwick were good, especially dealing with the bike luggage. To escape from the UK winter to georgous sunshine in only 4 hours, I cannot recommend Tenerife enough for its breathtaking mountain roads. PM me for any advice wanted.

A few friends of mine have booked an apartment in August in Las Americas. I was thinking of joining them in the spare room.

Are there any good routes around Americas mainly for 2-3 hour rides [although longer is fine] or would somewhere else be more apposite?

    Thanks for any information... :D

A pharmacy robbed me 30 euros for a small bottle of sunblock, apart from that the place is beautiful. Rode up Mt. Teide with 6 big named Liquigas riders, they let me ride up and over with them, was great fun. Not many places in the world you can ride with pros and TRY to make them wince :D Saying that I recommend the Italian roads for cycling, I had Maxime Bouet (Agritubel 2009) ride me off his wheel on a cracker road in the Dolomites.

from sea level in Los Cristianos up to the cafe at Vilaflor is probably going to seem like enough. the cafe is right on the T junction at 4,500ft (google earth reference).

above Vilaflor there is sod all until the cable car station underneath the volcano.

everything looks very near on the map but this is tenerife we are talking about :o

the roads up to Vilaflor from San Miguel and Granadilla are sensational if the weather is hot and sunny

here are 3 routes I did whilst on holiday with the family. All less than 4 hours, all pretty harsh! I had a car but you should be able to get your bike on some buses if you need to.

The 2nd one in that list goes through Masca and is just brilliant, although they are all good! The 1st one starts and finishes in Los Cristianos so would be easiest for you to adjust and is, also, brilliant...

For future reference, more info about cycling in Tenerife can be found on my website, www.tenerife-training.net

I'm planning on writing up a pdf booklet of all the decent roads.
